It looks like my original firmware binary 2.10 included a 1.30 for VC-FC (2.10 for VC-Ethernet).

I downloaded the 2.10 image again today and this time VC-FC was 1.32 (i need to read release notes on these images more often)

The 1.32 firmware upgrade of the FC Interconnect unit fixed the connections - thanks all and points assigned.
