Can't connect to a HP StorageWork San Switch 4/32 by ethernet port

Hi everybody!

We have this problem with a SW SAN Switch 4/32, we ping the ip address and it doesn't respond, we tried changing the ip address and same thing.

We don't want to reset the switch because it's in production.

There are two leds netx to the lan port, SPD and LINK, SPD is solid green, LINK is off.

We changed cables and port on the lan switch but nothing different happened.

Is there any command that could let us reset just the ethernet port in the switch without rebooting the whole switch.

Thanks,

Javier

If the LINK light is off, have you checked the other end of the ethernet cable? Maybe the port on the network switch is off.

I changed cables and port switch on the lan switch.

Has this connection worked before? Any changes made to the port on the SAN switch or Ethernet switch? Have you tried using a cross over LAN cable and connect a laptop to it and do a serial connection?

Yes it worked before. It started to failed after a Firefox session to the switch hanged.

Do you have the serial connection cable that came with the switch? If you do then you should be able to connect to the serial port and find out what the IP is set to. Standard switch user guide will tell you how to make the serial connection.

Yes, we have that cable, and we can connect to the switch by a serial connection. In fact, we could test changing the IP address, and activating DHCP instead of a fixed IP, but the problem continues.

See page 53 of the SAN Switch Installation Guide and onward on how to make the serial connection, etc. Under Setup and Install - General heading.

Switches should always be set to fixed IP, DHCP is not a very good idea as the IP can change and then you cannot get to it.

Re: Can't connect to a HP StorageWork San Switch 4/32 by ethernet port

Once you are connected to the switch via serial port, check the ethernet port characteristics, IP, Subnet, speed, online/offline etc. You may have a dead port, so you may have to log a call with HP if you have a service contract.
