When adding a new host to Command View what exactly is it doing when you add the host IP as dynamic or static?

I have NEVER entered an address there (since January 2002 ;-)
and I have NEVER seen any documentation why I should enter an address.

That option doesn't seem to exist anymore in Command View 9.3, just the "Host name/IP address" dialog is left.

I thought I saw a note somewhere which mentioned it was used for something to do with firmware updates. I can't find it now though so may have dreamt it.
