Do you recommend using Brocade Switch with a Virtual Connect

Do you recommend using Brocade as the SAN Switch in a C7000 Enclosure where that is using 1/10Gb Virtual Connect Ethernet Module as its switch?

Thanks

Re: Do you recommend using Brocade Switch with a Virtual Connect

It depends upon your needs, comfortability with Virtual Connect, available budget and sometimes political issues.

"Virtual Connect" is supposed to make it "easy".

I find configuring Brocade Switches easier than anything else.

IF you were to go with the Virtual Connect 4G/8G Fibre interconnects... you would still need some type of SAN Switch to connect your external devices to. The VC FC module is NOT a SAN Switch and thus, provides no zoning or other similar SAN Switch functionality.

Re: Do you recommend using Brocade Switch with a Virtual Connect

Thanks Steven: I apologize, my question wasn't very accurate. I meant:

Do you recommend using a "C7000 in-chassis" Brocade SAN Switch (such as the AJ821A) with a Virtual Connect switch (as opposed to a CISCO 3020 or 3120 switch?)

Thanks again,

ASAIK C7000 Chassis Enclosures can be used for managing more than one device.

It would be better to go for it if you would like to make C7000 your single point of virtual SAN management.C7000 can also support Virtual servers, cisco switches besides your VC for Brocades.

If only wanted to be used for Brocades then it would not be wise enough

Those are LAN switches which fit into a c3000/c7000 interconnect bay. They are NOT replacements for a VC module or an external Brocade/CISCO SAN switch.

You can have almost any configuration you want.

It is certainly reasonable to have Virtual Connect LAN Interconnects and Brocade/Cisco based SAN interconnects. You do NOT have to use Virtual Connect FC interconnects if you have VC LAN.

The limitation / recommendation is that whatever you use in the left bay, you should use in the right bay and in some cases... 2 different interconnects might not work properly when they are paired.

Acceptable combos... afaik:

1: VC LAN 2: VC LAN
3: VC FC 4: VC FC

1: VC LAN 2: VC LAN
3: Brocade 4: Brocade

1: VC LAN 2: VC LAN
3: Cisco 4: Cisco

1: VC LAN 2: VC LAN
3: Brocade 4: Cisco
(Typically you would not do this, but in a lab environment, I like to have fun)

The other limitation is that you should not use the VC FC modules if you do not have any VC LAN modules.
