EVA 4000 issue: Amber battery LED on one controller and no LCD on the other?

Hello,

We have an EVA 4000(xcs5.10) with one battery only in each controller. In Command View, we have a failed battery on one controller (warning state)and the other is working properly (see photo) but in the rack we see the following:
- On one controller (where the battery failed), an amber LED is lit and the OCP is accessible (normal operation).
- On the other controller, which is shown as good in Command View, the rear LEDs are all green (same thing as the other ctrl), but on the front of the controller the OCP is off, Battery LED is green, and only the samll battery LED is ON while the others are also off.

For information, the servers are accessing the EVA without any problem.

We have the new battery and we need to replace it; as per HP, we have to power off the controller since we have xc5.10
Questions:
1- Is that normal that the OCP of the other controller is OFF?
2- When the battery is failed (one controller with one battery only), is the controller disabled so we can turn it off without affecting any server accessing the EVA?

Thanks.

1. No, it is not normal. Both OCPs are active during normal operation - it's been that way since EVA V1.0.

2. No, the controller is not disabled. I recommend a clean shutdown through Command View EVA.

Re: EVA 4000 issue: Amber battery LED on one controller and no LCD on the other?

Hi,
Are you sure the display is not just dim/off ?? Try pushing any of the ocp buttons - any one will do and see if the OCP comes on.
Also - when replacing a batery there is NO need to power down the ctrl - just pull out the old battery wait for 30secs or so and then put in the new one.
You can also see a video on how to replace a battery from HP via HP smart portal:

Good idea to sort out if you have another problem before replacing the battery. If you are unsure as to what to do then you may wish to contact your loacl maintenance person.

Re: EVA 4000 issue: Amber battery LED on one controller and no LCD on the other?

Hi Uwe,
upgrade the code :)
Just read the doc... strange how it asks you to verify the failed battery and use "locate" to ID the ctrl - hard to do with it turned off!! The the next step just goes into removing the battery (nothing about power off ctrl), then replacing and then checking the flashing LEDS on the battery - again hard to do with it off and when you power on the ctrl there are lots of other LEDs flashing etc as well!!
Merry Christmas

Re: EVA 4000 issue: Amber battery LED on one controller and no LCD on the other?

If in Command View the staus of both controllers is shown good (with the failed battery issue on one controller), how can i turn off the controller with the failed battery without impacting any server connected to this EVA? normally, both controllers should be redundant and each server has MPIO installed: any further diagnosis to do before powering off that controller?
It is a critical site (data center of big Bank in the country)!!!

Then start by restarting the controller with the "off" OCP from command view to see if it comes up ok. If yes then go on to shut down the other one and swap the battery.

Any one could confirm: if a controller with failed battery, does it still servicing hosts requests?

Re: EVA 4000 issue: Amber battery LED on one controller and no LCD on the other?

I have replaced the failed battery using offline mode and it works.

The problem was with the other controller with a blank display:

- Power-off/ON controller: same issue
- After reboot of controller, it has disappeared from Command View & Windows device manager (it was shown as Good before power-off!!! I think it is a firmware 5.10 issue!!).

We have a spare Controller AD525C (labeled: Min firm. rev. 6.110) but the failed one is AD525B with Firm. 5.10: can i replace the failed B by C without upgrading the FW of the remaining controller?

If replacement is possible: how can I downgrade the new controller FW to 5.10 to return back my EVA to normal life then later we upgrade FW & Command View?

Best regards.

You need another spare - this one WILL NOT work with pre V6.110 firmware.
And this controller is for an EVA-4100.
