EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Hello

We have a EVA 6100 with 7 shelves currently attached. We want to attach an additional shelf. Our configuration goes...

1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > controller 1 > controller 2 > switches > 6 > 7 > 8

(We seem to be missing shelf ID 5)

The shelf ID cables run up the left hand side connecting in to all shelves and the controllers

We do not have a spare connection on the existing shelf cables so we need to attach another one (which we recieved with the new shelf)

My question is, what is the correct way to get this attached? Can this be done online, or is it an offline operation?

My main concern is that I will need to take the top termination connector off the top of the shelf ID cables which I assume closes the loop... I am concerned by taking this off it will have an effect? I've taken a look through documentation but am struggling to get clarity

Kind Regards

Steve

Re: EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Well reviewing this guide:

http://www.bitcon.be/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/c01129765.pdf

Seems to recommend doing is out of hours, but does not mention powering it down

I guess the key question is can I remove the top terminiator from the connector address bus whilst the array is online. If this is the case then the upgrade is much simpler

Thanks

Re: EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Hi

You should be carful when adding another  ID cable and removing

the top terminator is a risk and should not be done in working

hours. another option I found is disconnecting all ID cables

redoing the the ID bus and reconnecting the ID cable.

you should know that ID 5 is taken by the controllers see attached guide.

Also see from the guide that it says ID 7 should not be used. though I have

seen EVA's 6100 working with ID 7 like yours.

Re: EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Hi There,

So then it's a case of out of business hours, full SAN shutdown

We then remove the terminotor, add the new cable, cable the new disk enclosure (with no disks) and power up

Ensure the new enclose has the next logical ID

Then beginning adding the disks 1 by 1 with a 2 minute interval between each new disk

Then add the new capacity into the disk group

Thanks

Re: EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Hi

I don't know what you meen full SAN shutdown the whole upgrade

can be done online. we do it out of business hours to lower the risks

as I said the main risk is removing the terminator this risk can be avoided

by disconnecting the whole ID bus from all enclosures and adding

the new link and reconnecting the ID bus back as it was.

Re: EVA 6100 - attach new shelf and ID cable

Hi, the address bus is not needed for data on the loops as the system addresses components by ALPA, the enclosure address bus (EAB) will likely log a few errors during the 10 or 12 seconds it takes to add the extra segment so do it when I/O is stopped to be safe but there is no need to shut down the EVA. The EAB carries the health data from the EMUs and assigns shelf numbering for Command View so if left faulted (disconnected) your disks will all end up in unmapped pool but will still work, the system simply will not know what shelves they are in. Even so, this will correct itself when the EAB is back online.
