EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

Hi,

I have a EVA6300 with FC. On one server I have created a Vdisk on 300gb and users have been copy database backups to that disk.

At most disk was used up to 98% but many of the backups are deleted now and free disk space is over 100gb on server. But when I look in Command View is the allocate level still 98%, is there any way to shrink the Vdisk? Risky?

Thanks!

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

IMHO always a bit risky.

The OS must be aware of shrink and must be able to shrink the file system first. If you shrink the vdisk "too much", your data is gone.

I wonder where you see the allocation level of data in a vdisk???

You probably see the allocation level of vdisks in a diskgroup.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

Maybe I didn't explain that well.

As you see in the attachments, pic 1: Vdisk is allocated to 300GB but it's 115GB free (pic 2) on the disk in Windows.

The disk have been used to 300GB but users now have delete sql backups so it's now 115GB free.

Is then possible to shrink/update EVA that it's 115GB free on that Vdisk?

So the allocated level should be 300-115=185GB.

Thanks

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

Shrink a TP vdisk could be a problem depending on the running firmware version. Consider to delete and re-create the vdisk.

What firmware is running?

Hope this helps!

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

No, this is command view version.

Select the eva there, you will see the version in the right window.

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

This is the firmware: 10000000

Current version is 11001000.

AFAIR there was a potential problem with shrink operation with your version.

Consider to delete the vdisk and re-create.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: EVA6300 - Shrink Vdisk

is it possible to upgrade firmware to be able to shrink space that's not longer allocated?

or is the best solution to create a new vdisk and copy the files to that disk and then delete the old one?

thanks
