How do I increase size of virtual disk is EVA?

Hi,

Our EVA has the following:

Total HSV systems: 1
Total storage space: 1157.42 GB
Storage space used: 900.47 GB
Available storage space: 256.95 GB

There are 3 virtual disks:

1. Vdata
Disk Group: Default Disk Group
Capacity Req: GB
Capacity Used: 500 GB
Redundancy: Vraid5

2. Voradata
Disk Group: Default Disk Group
Capacity Req: GB
Capacity Used: 20 GB
Redundancy: Vraid5


3. avfiles
Capacity Req: GB
Capacity Used: 200 GB
Redundancy: Vraid5


I want to increase size of Vdata. How do I know how much space I can use? Is it safe to increase the size while there are running applications on the server to which the EVA is connected?

From EVA you can increase the size as much as possible, but make sure your OS is supporting such operation!

Hi Robert,

Yes, you can use the full available space shown. Its an online activity for EVA . Also the OS should support extention of the lun. Depending on the OS this extention can be offline activity specific to that LUN.

Another point to note is about the free space to be kept in EVA. 10% of total capacity is recommended to be kept free. This helps in faster rebuilding of the data in case of a disk failure. However this is a choice left to adminstrator.

Hi Robert,

Yes HP-UX 11.11 supports lun extension but in offline mode. Online Lun extension is from HP-UX 11.3x

Thanks Prakash. What do you mean by offline mode? Do you mean I have to stop all running applications and database? Or do I have to put the server in single user mode? Is it possible to get a procedure for it?

No. There is no (official) procedure to increase the LVM layout.

You can either re-create the VG or better create a new vdisk and add it to the VG.

As Torsten mentioned there are no specific steps. You will have to stop all applications since you need to reboot the server after expanding the Lun size.

Hi , if OS is HPUX 11.11, better way would be to create new LUN in EVA, Present it to the HPUX host, add this lun to your existign VG & incrase FS size.
