Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Hi all,

I've seen various opinions on this, and I was a little confused by the number of solutions. I have an EVA4400 that is connected to an HPUX 11.11 server.

I basically want to increase the size of my VDISK(s) so that my VG on the HPUX side has additional space so that I can extend some of my lvols.

Now I see in Command View, that I can increase the requested capacity of my VDISKs, but I read somewhere that while this can be done on the EVA (CV) side, the HPUX 11.11 side does not recognize the increase. Is this true? Other recommendations I've read mentioned creating a new VDISK, ok I guess if I gotta do that, but it would seem strange that I can't just extend the disks that I've got.

Again, I don't need to create any new lvols on the HPUX side...just want to lvextend the ones that I do have. So I guess what I'm asking, what is the "appropriate" procedure to increase the size of the VG so that I can get this done?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mauro

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Bad decision, bad luck.

LVM in hp-ux 11.11 cannot handle an increased LUN.

So your only choice is to backup all data, delete the VG, re-create the VG on the larger LUN and restore your data.

Only 11.23 and 11.31 can handle increased LUNs (vgmodify).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Ok well how about creating a new VDISK, then doing a vgextend on the VG and mounting a new lvol...wouldn't that be easier?

PS...as for the decision...wasn't mine :)

Thanks

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

This would be the way to go.

Be careful, if the vdisk is extended already now, a shrink may or may not destroy your data!

Hope this helps!

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Thanks Thorsten,

I kinda suspected that creating a new LVOL is what I'd have to do.

Thanks again for your recommendation. Kudos have been assigned.

Actually Torsten, so I'm clear...by "...This would be the way to go..." did you mean creating a new vdisk, then making a new VG from that????

Thanks again

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Create a new LUN (vdisk) and do a vgextend.

Depending on the current limits of your VG the new LUN should be the same size as the existing LUN.

Hope this helps!

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Cool...that's what I thought.

I should have the space, but any "drawbacks" if I have to make a LUN that is not the same size as the others? Just wondering.

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Look at your "vgdisplay -v" output:

Max PE per PV               4357
PE Size (Mbytes)            32

This defines your maximum size per disk/LUN, in this case

4357 * 32Mb = 140Gb

If you create a larger LUN, you cannot use the additional space, but you can add up to

Max PV                      16

16 (in this case) LUNs, each 140Gb (you hit another limit by doing this ...).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Increasing VDisk on EVA4400 (HPUX 11.11)

Yeah, I seriously doubt I'll be creating a LUN that big :)

Max PE per PV               50000
PE Size (Mbytes)            32

What I meant is, any dangers to creating a smaller LUN (vdisk) then the ones currently there? The current vdisks are all 225GB...suppose I create one that's say 150GB. Any problems with that?

BTW, having said that, I'll probably create another 225GB...but I was just curious about a smaller LUN.
