Load sharing eva3000

Can someone tell me if the EVA3000 does actual load sharing between the two hsv100's or is one strickly a backup for mthe other.

Re: Load sharing eva3000

This depends on several items, e.g. the firmware. What firmware are you using?

Hope this helps!

Re: Load sharing eva3000

VCS 3.X and below uses active - passive
VCS 4.X and up uses active - active

With the latter you can specify which controller is the owner of the vdisk and in that manner split the load on the storage system.

Re: Load sharing eva3000

Thank you for the response . We are running 3.028 at the present time. Our San Mgr has departed and that put us in a quick learning mode. So from what you are saying, our level of firmware only allows one controller to operate at a time . Are there any online courses I can view for training on command view for this.

Re: Load sharing eva3000

As far as I know there aren't any free online courses.

But there are user guides for Command View.

You can find what version of CV you have by clicking on the Help link in the top right corner.

on hp.com I could only find a new user guide (for 9. something):

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManualтМй=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64179&taskId=101&prodTypeId=18964&prodSeriesId=471497

This guide:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00605846.pdf

Is from 2006 so probably this is more applicable to you (but it doesn't say for which version it is).

Re: Load sharing eva3000

The EVA 3000 will load share no matter which Firmware is used i.e. both controllers can serve LUNs at the same time (but not the same LUN). You still have the ability to set which controller owns the LUN. (use Command View for everything except Securepath hosts, for Securepath you can use the host to set ownership).

For optimal performace ensure you balance the LUNs between controllers.

If you need more help post your host O/S and multipath software versions.

The ability to distribute multiple Virtual Disks over both controllers has been present since V1.0 of the EVA product line.

"active/passive" and "active/active" are just confusing terminology and do not fully describe the storage array behaviour.

That answers a lot of my concerns. Thank you very much for all your input.
