Loop failure

I am getting this error in the event log.

Fibre Channel Controller Status Change. The Fibre Channel Controller in Slot 3 has a new status of 6.
(Host controller status values: 1=other, 2=ok, 3=failed, 4=shutdown, 5=connectionDegraded, 6=connectionFailed)
[SNMP TRAP: 16028 in CPQFCA.MIB]

The server is a DL380 with dual FCA 2214 Qlogic controllers in.

OS is Windows 2003

Attached to a MSA 1000 with 2 additional arrays attached.

There are two array controller cards attacted from the server to the array via fibre.

from Insight Manager there is the following error

There is a flashing orange LED on the controller. The other controller is fine.

From Windows, there is no reported hardware failure on the card from device manager.

I have replaced the Fibre connection but this has not done anything.

From the SPmgr.exe there does not seem to be a problem with the card. It simply states the drive letter that is connected and working.

There does not seem to be any other tools installed on the server that will allow me to make a further diagnosis. Is Sansurfer safe to install to a LIVE production environment. I was worried about the driver part of the install.

In your opinion what has failed ?
Card in server ?
Card in MSA ?
Fibre - I have swapped this out ?
or
Software configuration ?

Hi Jason,

How the MSA is connected to the server, is it a direct connect or is it through a External Switch or an Embeded switch in MSA.

- Could you attach the spmgr output
- MSA CLI show tech_support
- ADU report of the server to which the MSA is connected.
What is the status of the controller any errors on the controller?? I feel show tech_support will give us the O/P.

Many thanks for the response. I will attempt to answer as many of the questions as I can.

The connection is Direct via Fibre from the MSA1500 to the Qlogix card in the Server

I only have the HP array CLI on the server.

There is no connection to the Array controller either IP or serial (the server is located some 150 miles away in a hosting center)

I have include more information in the ZIP, along with pictures.

I think it's the CARD in the server but want to make sure that this is not some config that has not been set. I did not build this server and there is no documentation on the setup.

FCA2214 - It is Q-Logic based Fibre Channel card, I would suggest you to perform diagnostics using San surfer utility on the FC-HBA and check for any fault.

Hi,
Is there already a soluction for this issue ? I have the same problem on 2 Proliant DL380 G5 servers with each 2 FCA 2214 QLogic HBa's connected directly to a Storage Works SAN Array 1000.

The solution was the logical connectivity was not consistent for example c-7000 enclosure with HP proliants.
Simply there was not Fibre setup on the Virtual Connect module, things to check.

TIP: Just reminder
Do you actually need san connected.?

Remember when troubleshooting SAN on blades there are areas to remember if you want SAN to work.

1. Device manager the Fibre and Qlogic Drivers are installed & qlogic present
2. Powerpath and EMC software are installed correctly as per procedures
3. Virtual Connect Blade Profile is enabled Channels A & B are enabled for Fibre.

The Correct WWNs world wide numbers are then passed on to the SAN guys to do the zoning and mapping etc.

To solve the problem if no SAN is not required deleted the Virtual connect profile and remove the qlogic drivers.
