MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

Hi Guys,

We have an MSA 1000 with two MSA1500cs controllers and MSA20 enclosures but the firmware on them has not been upgraded for a long time. The task has been handed to me to upgrade it but I'm acutely aware that some controllers need a step upgrade (going from one firmware version to the next until you are at the latest) and some are just happy to take the new firmware (going from current firmware to the newest in one step).

Can anyone tell me if the MSA will happily accept a block upgrade instead of a step upgrade without any problems?

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

First you should check what firmware is running.

a/a or a/p?

In caseof active/passive - do you want to stay with a/p or upgrade to a/a?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

We are currently running A/P using firmware 4.82.B272 on the MSA 1500CS controllers and MSA20 Enlosures are 1.24.

We would like to move to an A/A configuration which I believe the latest firmware uses (version 7). I understand that A/P was only present upto V5?

Thank you for your reply.

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

Excellent, thank you very much does this mean I can just do a straight upgade to V7.2 without having to run through the other versions of the Firmware?

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

How did I miss that?!?

Okay, so according to the notes if I'm upgrading via the flash utility I can upgrade from any firmware as it does not mention a version?

But if I'm upgrading by the CLI then I need to have firmware versions:

  • For active/passive MSA1000, existing firmware on the controller must be v4.32 or later.
  • For active/passive MSA1500, existing firmware on the controller must be v4.94 or later.

Okay... Hmmm... I think to be on the safe side I will upgrade to v4.94 first whichever version I use.

Thank you. Your help has been much appreciated. If you have any more recommendations I would like to know.

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

The MSA20 FW will need to step. I don't recall if we included the necessay binarys to step from 1.24 straight to 2.08 in the latest fw bundles. If you can locate the 1500 bundles that included MSA20 2.02. You can flash both controllers.  Then step to the latest for both.  Then you should be good to go.

If this array has been on for very log, then the batteries on the MSA20 will report as failed, once you flash the MSA20 to 2.08.  In a couple hours, you will see the MSA20 batteries report as failed on the 7-seg on the back of the MSA20, It will report F1, F2 or F3 for which battery is faulty.

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

Right... Then that'll be this one to begin with...

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=415598&swItem=co-41089-2&prodNameId=415600&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=3

According to the version information this link is to MSA1500cs A/P firmware 5.20 and MSA20 Firmware of 2.02 in the same flash utility.

Or:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=415598&prodNameId=415600&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-40593-2

Which is an A/A firmware (7.00/2.02 A/A)

I also found the 5.10 / 1.52 firmware iso.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=415598&prodNameId=415600&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-29405-8

I noted you said I could go direct to 2.02 in your last post. I would prefer to upgrade to the 5.10 / 1.52 firmware first and then move up the pipe. Would you agree this is the best route or would this just be an extra step?

I've noted the batteries issue. I will keep an eye out for that. Thank you.

Re: MSA 1500 CS and Firmware

It's not necessary to use the v5.10/1.52 but if you wont too, no harm will be done.
