MSA1000 Performance

Hey All,

So, i know the MSA1000 is a dog, but i couldn't beleive its this slow. I have used IOMeter on a vmware server attached to the MSA in RAID 10 w/ 6x 146GB 15K drives, and another VM server on a EMC CX700 with 6x 156GB 15K RAID 5. Both are 2GB SAN's, although the EMC is obviouslt fibre channel drives.

I have 2x controllers in the MSA1000, both are the latest firmware and in active/active. I have tried also setting my VM Node to use Round Robin multipathing, but that didnt improve performance.

Here are my results:

2GB EMC CX500 RAID5
100% read - 60mb set - 120 seconds
157.60MB /sec

100% write - 60mb set - 120 seconds
145.80MB /sec


2GB Active/Active MSA1000 RAID 10
100% read - 60mb set - 120 seconds
71.70MB /sec


100% write - 60mb set - 120 seconds
56.68MB /sec


Any suggestions?

Hi, maybe more cache on the MSA1000 should be added, but CX500 is midrange comparable to e.g. EVA3000/4000/4100 and MSA1000 is entry level...

From what I have seen, the MSA1000 is not good in doing sequential I/O.

Of course not... Even if it is running with active/active firmware, one controller is still maintaining a logical disk at a time. With RR you could even get less performance, because the second controller must pass the I/O request to the owner.

DFC,

This is HP Forum and calling MSA1000 names is not appreciated.

Anyway, upload the show tech-support from MSA and we will come to know more, to know what is causing the numbers that you have pasted here.

From what i read, this command is not avaliable on the windows CLI.. I dont have the RJ45z cable to do this..
