NAS : is NETWORK Attached Storage, means the storage is accessed at a file level using LAN interface. The protocols used are CIFS for Windows based computers and NFS for Unix based computers.

SAN : is Storage Area Network, commonly called SAN attached Storage. This is Block storage which needs to be accessed via FC protocol using FC-HBA or IScsi using ISCSI enabled LAN Cards. The storage assigned needs to be partitioned and formatted based on the operating system used.

Hope this gives a brief difference.
