Need advice on changing a failed disk
Hello everyone,
I'm currently working with a StorageWorks P6300 EVA with a failed disk and I'm seeking some advice on the correct method of replacing it.
The failed disk (2TB) is part of a 6 disk group (please see the attached pictures for group & disk details).
I also have a few ungrouped 2TB drives already in the EVA that can be used as replacements.
From my research, I'm seeing a variety of methods to replace a drive but I am unsure which of them is the correct way to go.
Is the replacement method as follows?
- Ungrouping the failed drive
- Choosing to ungroup in the background and allowing that to finish
- Group one of the unused 2TB drives in the EVA into the disk group
- Click the Remove button on the failed disk
I would appreciate some feedback on the above.
Best Regards

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
If you have unused Spare Disk I would first add one to the Disk Group as replacement.
Wait until the leveling is complete.
Try to ungroup the Disk, this removes any Data from it.
But I think it does not work because the Disk is dead.
Then remove the Disk by using the remove button.
May be it also did not work if the Disk is dead, then pull it and place a airflow blank in the Space.

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
Thanks for the suggestion Cali.
When I try to group a known good drive to the group I'm getting the following message;
Following group action, result: Initialization of physical store or volume failed during the requested operation. Check the failed drives in the system.
Any idea why this would appear?

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
Tried removing the failed drive and grouping, same result unfortunately.
Seems like the group status might be stopping the progress. I'm seeing the Transition state of the group being shown as "leveling" and it appears to be stuck.
Could this status prevent a disk replacement?

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
I'm seeing the following steps to replace a failed disk;
- Remove failed disk
- Wait one minute (disk replacement delay)
- Insert new disk
- Group new disk
Is this the method that you use?

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
The odd thing is, the fault LED is not lit but it is shown that the drive has failed in the command view.
I tried removing, waiting, inserting the new drive and grouping; did not work, same error.

Re: Need advice on changing a failed disk
You have no Support?
Did you see something in the Contoller Log?
Storage > View Events > Controller Log
Did you see the new Drive attend in "Ungrouped Drives"?
