Node WWN .vs. Port WWN

Need help with some basics.

What is the difference between a Node WWN and Port WWN? Also, how do we find out these numbers in a Windows m/c?

For a HBA mounted in a server the node WWN is the WWN of the HBA itself, the port WWN is the WWN of a specific port on this HBA.

To find out use the appropriate tools, e.g. sansurfer, ...

If QLogic HBAs, use SANSurfer. If Emulex HBAs, use HBAnyware.

Think of a device with multiple fibre ports on it.

For instance...

The EVA has 4 or 8 host ports. The EVA "Node" itself has a WWN... 5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxx0 (World Wide Node Name)

Each port has it's own WWPN...

5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxx8
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxx9
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxA
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxB
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxC
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxD
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxE
5000-1FE1-xxxx-xxxF

There are World Wide Port Names.

So, the "device" is the node (Node WWN)... and the connections on the device... are ports (Port WWN).

You can find the Node WWN stamed on the HBA, through the HBA's bios, using the hba utilities mentioned , checking the Name Server on your SAN Switch
and depending upon your type of SAN Switch... running simple commands at the cli.
