From memory, when LUNS are presented to Windows hosts on VCS 3.028 there is a pull down menu where the OS type is selected before presenting the LUN.
If a LUN is presented to ESX / Vmware servers what should be selected?
I was sent the following paragraph by another SAN guy, but it would be very helpful if someone could confirm exactly how it should be done, both on VCS 3.x and 4.x. Thanks
""One specific thing that will be worth a look is which OS the VMware LUN's have been configured as. Other OS's simply have drop-down items to pick from. From memory, there's a custom parameter (Hex string???), in the EVA3000/5000 VCS software for VMware. It's been fixed in recent releases of XCS for the EVA4000/6000/8000 and later. Some people set it up as some flavour of Linux (which although some believe ESX is, it isn't, and it does need different settings). If it's wrong, byte alignment is all screwed up meaning that two disk reads and or writes need to be performed for every read or write""

Solution
VCS V3.028 requires "CUSTOM 000000002200282E".
Supported versions of VCS V4 should have a working "VMware" entry.
And make sure that a virtual disk is mapped to the same LUN address for all servers - otherwise the VMFS will not be mounted.

Re: Presenting LUNs to VMware on VCS 3.x / 4.x - EVA5000
Hi Frank,
For FW 3.x you shoul set the host as custom with value "000000002200282E"
For FW 4.x the host should be configured as VMware.
See the doc below on page 10
