RSM Business Copy Issue

RSM Business Copy Issue

Hello All,

Do you have any experience to run BC on the large SQL database (about 1 TB)?

My situation is every time I scheduled job to run business copy on that big SQL DB which means to freeze the DB before snaphot, it always failed and cannot unfreeze/thaw by itself eventhough the BC script show that it has.

Other servers that have small DB size (below 500GB),the BC jobs always successfully executed to create a snapclone.

Did BC have limitation on size of Vdisk?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

Hi Uwe/Steven,

Sorry for the late reply.

In my environment,we have an EVA 8000

Model Number: HSV210
Software Version: CR0BF7xcsp-5100

Is it this version was too old for my EVA and have limitation/bugs/issue?

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

Wow.. that is pretty old.

It could very well be possible that there is a limitation. I do not know of any offhand, but I am not a BC expert.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

I'm trying to solve this issue without to upgrade my EVA controller firmware because it will be a long downtime for my production servers unless I have no option at all.

I have only left the two servers which have big size of DB that not yet have success for BC jobs for snapshot/snapclone for the LUN.
(suspect that big size of Vdisk is my concern right now that failed the BC jobs)

Hope someone BC expertise here can give some advice.

Thanks in advance.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

The EVA is not very good when it has to snap large virtual disks. On the early days it was recommended to change the vdisk to write-through caching before taking the snapshot.

Another 'workaround' was the introduction of 'containers' (think of them as a preallocated virtual disk with no data in it) in VCS V4/XCS V5.1 - unfortunately they require a full-space reservation.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

Hi Uwe.

Good day and Happy New Year.

I checked for all my Vdisks and it was set to "write-back" cache mode.

I think I can try to change to "write-trough" cache mode before do a snapshot/snapclone.

That means I must doing it manually every time before schedule the BC jobs or maybe can do it by scripts or something?

Give me time to test it out and I will feedback to you soon.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

I think the RSM 'SetStorageVolumeWriteCacheMode' + 'WaitForStorageVolumeWriteCacheFlush' functions do what you need.
Set the mode to write-through before you create the snapshot.

Re: RSM Business Copy Issue

Hi Uwe...

Good Day.

I already test it out the syntax that you suggested and the result still the same. The BC jobs still failed.

Is it can we check any detail log regarding the BC job running or during the freeze/unfreeze DB process?

I'm only able to checked the SQL log but that cannot give me any detail description.

Anyway thanks in advance.
