SAN setup and configuration

Hi

I have been handed down the following SAN equipment:

1x HP Storage Management Appliance III
1x HP Integrity rx2600
2x HP Storageworks hsv100
2x HP Storageworks SAN Switch 2/8V
24x 146GB 10k SAS disks
a bunch of fibre optics cables, console cables, LAN cables.

I have no idea how this equipment should be set up so,I was hoping someone was able to advise on:

1. whether the equipment is sufficient for a complete SAN setup and what role each device plays

2. how each device connects to another, and using which type of connection

3. the software required and where I may acquire it

If there is any link for a setup/config walkthrough, that would be great as well.
Thanks in advance

Cheers

Re: SAN setup and configuration

I hope this is for testing only, because it is quite old.

You hopefully have a disk enclosure for the EVA too.

You need to study some guides before.

Put the EVA and the disk enclosure together (see EVA guide for cabling); connect the servers and EVA to the switch, create separate zones for the servers. Aquire an command view eva license and install CV on the windows host for managing; configure EVA and present it to the hosts. Make sure EVA runs latest active/active firmware, so you don't need to buy additional software for the rx2600, if running hp-ux.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: SAN setup and configuration

Hi Torsten

thanks for your reply.

Yes there are 2 disk enclosure for the 24 disks (12 in each).
By EVA, do you refer to the hsv100-es + disk enclosures?

I assume SMA III is the managing windows host, but what role does the Integrity server play, and what needs to be installed on it?

"configure EVA and present it to the hosts."
Do "hosts" refer to the servers which I want to present the virtual disks to?

Sorry if my questions seem very elementary, but I was given the equipment without any manuals/software, and with no one to seek help from, so I am really clueless about this. Hope you can be patient with me.
Thanks.

Re: SAN setup and configuration

The disk shelfs and the HSV controllers form the EVA, in this case an EVA3000.

The earlier releases had a special management appliance with a modified windows versions (the sma); but nowadays you can use a "normal" windows server with command view eva installed.

You basically need the EVA, 2 switches and a windows server for management running CV.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: SAN setup and configuration

Disk enclosures/shelves for the EVA-3000 have 14(!) bays, not 12 and the disks have FC_AL interfaces not SAS.

Re: SAN setup and configuration

12 disks in each does not mean there are 12 slots only. I'm not aware of *any* enclosure with 12 slots.
Can you find any product number on the enclosure?
However, disks for EVAs are either FC or FATA (this is SATA with fibre channel interface, aka near-online - what a name!).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

M6412(A). I know it is not for the EVA-3000 ;-)
Or D2600 (SAS).

But you're right. It does not mean these are 12-bay enclosures. I came a bit off-course when I read "SAS".

Re: SAN setup and configuration

I forgot, here are some more 12 slot enclosures (MSA60, DS2600 and of course all the new enclosures for the new x400 EVAs), but all don't work with EVA3000.

Maybe SAS is the future for such arrays, but there were no such disks in the past.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: SAN setup and configuration

Hi Torsten

so,

EVA = hsv100 + disk enclosures + disks
Windows managing host = SMA III + CV
Switches = well, the switches

but where does the rx2600 come in?

BTW, it says on the disks '146GB Fibre Channel'.
Not sure where I got SAS from, sorry about that.

You are right.

The rx2600 is just a server, you can present some LUNs to it ...

Hope this helps!
