Some doubts on fabric login process

Hi All,
I have few doubts on fabric login process and hence i seek ur expertise to get some idea.

1. How the communication will happen if there is no switch (fabric which assigns DID,SID to nodes) between host node and storage node (i.e. in SAN pt to pt communication)

2. What is plogi (i.e. what happens during plogi)

any detailed docs having fabric login process will also be very much helpful

Thanks in advance

Re: Some doubts on fabric login process

Hi Raja,

In Direct connection addressing scheme is not required as in the case of switched fabric. All the frames intended are to the other device.

Re: Some doubts on fabric login process

Hi Raja,

Basically the FLOGI (Fabric LOGIn) the node (server HBA or storage device) communicates with the switch and the switch gives the device a FCID (Cisco) or N_Port ID (Brocade). This is a 24 bit address the device then can use to communicate with other devices in the SAN.

The PLOGI (Port LOGIn) is where the device learns the other devices it can communicate with. This information comes from the Name Server on the switch. This is were zoning comes into play.

Hope this explains it at a high level,
