System errors on W2k3 with MPIO DSM 3.03 with EVA8000

Hi!

We have a strange problem which started up lately. Following scenario:

EVA8000 (Version 6110, Software CR0ECAxcsp-6110)
Server DL380G5 /w 2x FC2142SR (Emulex LP A8002A)
Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise fully patched, latest HP drivers/software
HP DSM Manager v4.00.01
HP MPIO Full Featured DSM for EVA4x00/6x00/8x00 v3.03.00
All servers are running MSSQL Server 2000 (don't ask...) - but it is reproducable without MSSQL installed

What happens:

The performance of the SAN is sometimes around floppyspeed - if at all. SAN connection seems to stall from time to time. The following error keeps popping up in the eventlog:

Source: HP MPIO DSM Manager
Category: none
Event-ID: 100
Type: error

SpWmiInfo:Error=0 Line=275 File=.\WmiMpioControllerInfo.cpp

Another issue is that those servers seem to drop network connectivity too from time to time, where the HP networktool claims that the link went down on the NICS. But I can assure that the links did NOT go down, they were up all the time. A symptom is that the servers throw a "NIC connection lost" trap everytime they get manually rebooted.

We have that problem on 2 identical servers and it just recently popped up on a third server, that has just been updated to the latest HP drivers/software lately.

I'm totally puzzled where to search - are there any know problems with the latest updates from HP?

Regards
Sascha

Another error which keeps popping up is an application error. This even pops up as windows when logging in as administrator:

(Text translated from German, so it might actually be a bit different in English, but I guess you get the point)

Application "VolumeInfoProvider.exe" has been terminated. Please send a report to Microsoft... blabla.

Entry in the eventlog:

Source: Application Error
Category: (100)
Event-ID: 1000

Crashed application: VolumeInfoProvider.exe, Version 4.2.120.1, crashed module VolumeInfoProvider.exe, Version 4.2.120.1, address 0x00015f10

This is an absolutely fresh install of windows on 2 brand new DL380G5, with just SP2 and the latest HP drivers/software installed. As soon as I present a LUN to the system, those problems occur.

I'm lost here...

Re: System errors on W2k3 with MPIO DSM 3.03 with EVA8000

Are you using SCSIport or StorPort for the Fibre Channel adapter?

Does that include the StorPort hotfix?

If you mean the QFE StorPort Hotfix from Microsoft: yes, that's installed.

The exact installation of HP drivers/software is:

I have no clue why the express install of the PSP installed the P700M drivers, as that server only has a P400 - but i can neither uninstall it or update it.

I think iSCSI got installed with the installation of the full featured DSM - but I'm of course not using it as we only have a FC network running for storage.

Re: System errors on W2k3 with MPIO DSM 3.03 with EVA8000

We have a comparable strange problem on our brand new proliant ML350G6 running MS Server 2008.

In our case the server hangs frequently, no response at all but the mouse, keyboard, mstsc, nothing else seems to work. We have run extensive tests on both hardware and software, no error logs seem to give any clue.

Thing is, on our system as well the 1.3.0.0. version of HP ProLiant Smart Array P700m Clustering Support Software for Windows was installed automatically, while only the integrated P410i controller is present. I can also find no way to deinstall this software.

We are quite puzzled as well!

HP, please respond to this case!
