Re: Upgrade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class Firmware
then you need to do this in steps, quite a few of them as well.
Brocade only supports upgrade two steps up.
Release notes can be found here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&contentType=SupportManual&docIndexId=64180&prodSeriesId=3185340&prodTypeId=3709945
Like the release notes for 5.3.0b:
http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01196279/c01196279.pdf
"HP does not support directly upgrading from more than two previous releases. For example, upgrading
from Fabric OS 5.1.x to 5.3.0b is supported, but upgrading from Fabric OS 5.0.x or a previous release
directly to 5.3.0b is not.
Upgrading a switch from Fabric OS 5.0.x or a previous release to 5.3.0 requires a two-step process: first
upgrade to Fabric OS 5.1.x or 5.2.x and then upgrade to 5.3.0b."
Then just go upwards and see which versions you need to jump between.
Quite possibly that you will have trouble finding the 6.0.x version online so you might have to contact HP Support to get that firmware.

Re: Upgrade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class Firmware
5.x: can jump one revision: so from 5.0 can go to 5.2, then 5.3. You need to go to 5.3 before upgrading to 6.0.x.
6.x cannot jump any revision: so from 6.0 can upgrade to 6.1, 6.1 to 6.2, etc.
If you cannot find the necessary interim upgrades on hp.com, contact HP tech support for assistance. We can create a ftp site and upload the necessary revisions there.
Note: there is a special 6.0.0c revision that should be used when doing this type of upgrade. This is available only by contacting HP SAN switch support.
ALWAYS backup your SAN switch configuration before making any changes.

SolutionWith Brocade this means having a ftp site that the switch can access, then running this command at the cli:
#configupload
You will then be prompted for the IP address and login info for the ftp site in order to save the config as a text file.
#configdownload
allows you to grab a configuration from a ftp and put it on the switch.
The most common loss of the SAN switch and/or its configuration is when it reboots, just like a computer. A firmware upgrade involves the switch rebooting at the end of the flash. So have a backup before flashing firmware. And get an updated backup before making any configuration changes.
