Using EVA5000 shelves on EVA8000/8100 ?

Hi,

I've been told you can't use shelves from an EVA5000 on a newer EVA8000/8100 - due to CAB/EMU addressing.

Can someone please confirm this ? I had a look at the back
of the shelves and they look identical to me.

regards,

Re: Using EVA5000 shelves on EVA8000/8100 ?

Over the years, there have been a number of disk enclosures been built for the various EVA models. They _may_ look identical on the outside, but the internal components make up the difference.

The EVA-8100 requires new I/O modules and if I remember correctly, both, the 8000+8100 need a newer revision of the EMU.
Best is to have a qualified technican with access to the compatibility tables check what is available and what replacement parts are needed.

Re: Using EVA5000 shelves on EVA8000/8100 ?

thanks uwe.

i'll talk to our site engineer.

in the meantime, i like trying to do some independent research where possible :)

if it was just a firmware upgrade to make the shelves usable from a 5000 -> 8000 that'd be pretty good.

if it's actual hardware replacement to make them usable that's probably not going to be make financial sense.

When I wrote 'newer revision', I meant 'newer HARDWARE revision' which implies a module swap.

EMU firmware is tightly coupled with the controller firmware and the EMUs are updated automatically after a controller update.

See the attached manual.
It tells you exactly what you need and what to check for.

Re: Using EVA5000 shelves on EVA8000/8100 ?

thanks.

to summarize, you really need hardware version 2 on your EMU and your IO/Comms as well as a certain minimum software revision.

checking this requires your existing EVA5000 talking to commandview i guess - wish i'd known this before turning off all the EVA5000s to save power in the DC (doh!)

if you have the right minimum hardware version you can update the software firmware and reuse the shelves in an EVA8k upgrade process.

if you don't, you're SOL unless you can find a source of the correct modules - which is unlikely to make sense to buy new from HP (compared to just buying a new array).

The EVA [468]100 uses *different* I/O modules than the EVA [468]000!

Re: Using EVA5000 shelves on EVA8000/8100 ?

good point UWE.

i should have been more clean the above might only work for a EVA5000 -> EVA8000 upgrade process. not to the EVA X100.

that said, i have something like 36 * EVA5000 shelves!

seems like such a waste to have them sitting around :)
