VA7100 Warning state
Hi,
Recently D8 harddisk in VA7100 is failed and rebuild process is not successful with VA7100, we started this rebuild process with armrbld -r array-name still rebuild is failing, we started this rebuild process for six times and still rebuild is failed and at that point no data loss or no redundancy loss, only warning messages with syslog about harddisk, so we replaced this harddisk with another disk and still we see warning messages, we tried to reseat failed hardisk again and arry warning messages goes away and rebuild starts and immediately rebuild fails and says D8 disk failed and puts array in warning mode.
Here is our server details
Server : HP9000 L class
OS : HPUX 11.00
Array : VA7100 with 15 * 73 GB disk
Here is armdsp command output and attached logprn output as a zip file

Re: VA7100 Warning state
Suggestions:
Physically examine the system. Look for drives with indicator lights other than green.
You may be able to use cstm, mstm or xstm to identify bad drives.
dd if=/
Might help you test safely what drives are working and which are not.

Re: VA7100 Warning state
Steven,
Thanks for your reply.
I checked all the LUNS using ioscan and diskinfo, with ioscan all LUN's are in claimed state and with diskinfo all LUN's are visible. And with launcher commandview all the components are green light and good except array status, array status light is orange warning mode and with launcher commanview it gives following for array status
Overall array status : Warning
Warning state : Redundacy loss
Rebuild failed
Missing drive
Informational state : Disk scrubing progress
Balancing progress
Redundancy level : 1 drive
Secure manager : Disabled
And I checked all file systems and oracle database, no errors and every thing is up and runnig and no errors with syslog , only array is in warning state.
I did physical inspection of the server, I see amber/orange light with array and all green light with harddisks and amber/ornage light and green with server side HBA, I think orange and green light from server side HBA is common.
Pls send your suggestions.
Thanks

Re: VA7100 Warning state
>>identify bad drives.
>>dd if=/
These commands will not help in indentifying bad drives on the VA7100. HP-UX sees the LUNs presented from the VA7100 to the HP-UX system. Doing a 'dd' on a LUN will tell you nothing concerning the underlying drives that make up the LUN.
The D8 drive that you reference looks good in the attached 'armdsp' output. The drive is "included" and has been formatted with the required 520 byte block length.
If you have support on this unit, I would open a call with HP and get their assistance. Something is not quite right.

Re: VA7100 Warning state
The first thing I would do is make ABSOLUTELY SURE your backups that back up the data on this array are running and working correctly.
The 2nd thing I would do, is open a call with HP, as I advised above. There is definitely something going on with this disk array that is not normal.
If you have another spare disk, you **MIGHT** try using a different disk in the D8 slot. It may be that your replacement disk was dead.

Re: VA7100 Warning state
Torsten,
I tried reseat failed harddisk, as soon as I pull D8 replaced harddisk then rebuild process starts and after some time rebuild process fails and I restarted rebuild process with armrbld -r array1 and still rebuild process fails and tried this five times, problem is rebuild is failing. After rebuild failure, I reseated old failed harddisk and as soon as I insert failed disk with arrray, array starts formats failed hardisk and includes and array warning status goes away and I see all green lights and after few minutes balancing process starts and it say D8 harddisk is failed and this puts array in warning mode with amber light in array and with D8 failed harddisk.
Thanks

Re: VA7100 Warning state
I restarted rebuild process after pulling new harddisk in D8 (not with failed hardisk) because after pulling new harddisk in D8, array starts rebuild process and after few minutes it says rebuild process is failed.
Thanks
