What causes a storage area network(SAN) data to lose all its data?

I would like to know how its data could be wiped out suddenly and the causes for the data loss. Detailed answers and web references would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A SAN cannot loose the data, but an array can. Possible reasons are multiple disk failures and human error.

Hope this helps!

Or config corruption (we've experienced that one a while ago).

In the end the data is really safe on it, because the data is not dependent on the storage controllers.

Losing both controllers doesn't mean data loss, but downtime. Also an EVA for example has built in protection mechanismes called RSS sets.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a backup ;-), and a replicated copy of the data doesn't count as backup.. This doesn't protect you from data corruption.

Joel:
In an EVA, all data and metadata is on disks, you can replace the controllers and the new ones read the metadata from disks. In most of arrays all connections are redundant. The only way to lose data is simultaneous disk failures, so you loose data redundancy and the way to recover. That's way backup is so important.
