Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster and Hyper-V - EVA P6300 OS Type...? LH or 4198009A8 ??

Dear community,

I was wondering if someone could clarify the exact Operating System type when connecting:

   1- windows 2008R2 standalone hosts
   2- windows 2008R2 Hyper-V cluster nodes
3- windows 2008R2 Failover cluster nodes

I am deploying a windows 2008R2 failover cluster on a P6300 (CV 10, XCS 1000010000), I have installed the HP DSM MPIO 4.0.2 and presented some drives, the shared volumes have been presented, but will be activated once another team installs and configures the cluster service and SQL...

Has anyone tested these configurations?

I have searched the web and found some really interesting articles on SCSI-3 reservation and the HP DSM manual has a note to configure windows 2008R2 as "windows LH" type or " 00000004198009A8 " custom type.

NOTE:
For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover cluster to work
properly, set the array host mode on the HP CommandView EVA to "Microsoft Windows LH" or set
  custom host mode to "00000004198009A8".

check out the DSM install and config guide as well (same note).

Do I need to do anything else? (Like a specific order when presenting the shared storage volumes? I am thinking: set the right OS type in CV, present all shared volumes to the group of nodes, enable failover cluster and validate)

thanks for your help on this.

Just a quick update, with the custom host mode, the cluster validation test failed due to lack of persistent reservation.

After some research over the weekend, it's only obvious that EVA with windows 2008 R2 SP1 is not a straighforward deployment. Conflicting resolutions as well...

I think it's time to raise a support call to HP (and MS most likely).

Re: Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster and Hyper-V - EVA P6300 OS Type...? LH or 4198009A8 ??

Dear community,

for CV 10.x, the "custom mode" or "windows LH" or "windows 2008" are actually the same. So any of them is valid for windows 2008 clusters. Now I fixed my issue by unpresenting, rebooting the nodes,  then representing the volumes once the nodes were up.

I did not have time to troubleshooting it, but I suspect that the commissioning sequence must be followed:

build OS > install MPIO + HP DSM > activate Cluster services > present one volume > run cluster validation test (CVT) > if successful, deploy all volumes...

Also, watch out on win2k8 R2 SP1, there is a on-demand patch available ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2531907 ) that will address some of the CVT failures.

I hope it makes sense.
