setting up Device Mapper on-line

Hi,

a DL360 server Red-Hat 5.2 connected to an storage array EVA4000 XCS 6.220 with a right zoning,

the server should have 4 paths to access its lun.

So, Device Mapper multipath is not configured (and HP kit not installed), multipath.conf file is empty, multipathd daemon is not running and commands multipath -l and multipath -ll give nothing.

Only a LVM command tell missing paths:

#pvdisplay /dev/sdd
Found duplicate PV viOaYHfdtEoHqkndf4gFI9VIBzKm7vEj: using /dev/sda not /dev/sdd
Found duplicate PV viOaYHfdtEoHqkndf4gFI9VIBzKm7vEj: using /dev/sdb not /dev/sda
Found duplicate PV viOaYHfdtEoHqkndf4gFI9VIBzKm7vEj: using /dev/sdc not /dev/sdb
Found duplicate PV viOaYHfdtEoHqkndf4gFI9VIBzKm7vEj: using /dev/sdd not /dev/sdc
--- Physical volume ---
PV Name /dev/sdd
VG Name datavg
PV Size 300,00 GB / not usable 3,81 MB
Allocatable yes
PE Size (KByte) 4096
Total PE 76799
Free PE 2507
Allocated PE 74292

Question : what is the real method in this case to set up Device Mapper on this server to have 4 paths to access its LUN.

Are the followings steps right:

1/ stop application which access EVA LUN
2/ update multipath.conf with HSV entry
3/ start multipathd daemon
4/ restart application

Or is it possible to do it without stopping application.

Is the HP Enablement kit is mandatory ?

Regards

Re: setting up Device Mapper on-line

So, my question is to know if experience on rebuild a bad configuration with device mapper not installed and not configured, off-line or on-line.

Re: setting up Device Mapper on-line

we had used the native multipath and it was pretty smooth when we configured the multipath online.
