Yes, HP is still selling StorageWorks 8/24 switch. It was released in June 2008. The 8Gb technology is not that old anyway. I would suggest to contact HP sales to get more information.
Yes, this switch can act as a core switch as well as edge switch.. It is mentioned at the following link which says "The HP StorageWorks 8/24 SAN switch addresses the needs of SMB organizations as well as large enterprises by functioning as a standalone core switch or as lower-cost edge switch in large core-to-edge tiered storage networks."
