Data fabric tech is all the talk these days

With HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric, enterprises can stop wasting time managing their data – and instead, get insights from it!

We were discussing migrating from their current big data solution, and it occurred to me that they spend a lot of time maintaining their data and very little time extracting value from it. 

For example, they questioned me extensively about how metadata is handled and distributed. When I dug in a bit further, I discovered they must constantly monitor their metadata management system to ensure it stays online. And faced with a growing need to support multiple workloads and open data access, too much time is spent managing Hadoop instead of enabling uses cases that deliver value.

They wanted to know--could HPE help?  The answer is yes, we can help.

Modernize data management

Connecting data across core, cloud, and edge sources isn’t easy especially with today’s large data sets, complex data structures, and requirements for real-time data access by applications and users. But before data fabric technology even became popular, HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric designers (experienced at both scale-out computer clusters and enterprise-grade file systems) had set out to solve this exact problem. The result? HPE created an edge-to-cloud data fabric and file system solution that consolidates any data type from any source into a single source of truth for data-intensive analytics use cases.   

Yet, we didn’t stop there.

By consolidating a broad range of APIs, infrastructure, and ingest mechanisms into an open platform, customers can take advantage of streamlined architecture and workflows that greatly reduce complexity and provide direct data access to a wide variety of applications and tools. Such a platform also reduces the need to re-architect systems or databases to accommodate new technologies (i.e., containers) or projects.  

Mixed workloads and open access are key

By modernizing data management with HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric, enterprises can support mixed workloads for ease and speed in creating and deploying analytical environments including batch analytics, real-time analytics, as well as event streaming and key/value columnar store architectures. The power of an open platform enables business analysts, data scientists, and engineers ubiquitous data access for programming languages, operating systems, and tools of their choice which leads me to my answer to the customer example above. HPE helps businesses spend less time on data operations, giving them more time to enable and expand new uses cases that deliver business value. 

The IDC study, Taking a Short Path to Value: The Business Value of the HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric, illustrates this fact best by reporting impressive results from HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric customers. Examples include: 57% lower five-year cost of operations and 33% increased productivity for analytics teams with hundreds of team members. One customer is quoted, “Compared with a traditional architecture, our data scientist team is 50% more productive because they can work on a greater volume of data in a shorter amount of time.”

Customers continue to expand use cases and extract value

Almost a year ago, my colleague, Ellen Friedman, described MapR’s journey to HPE in her blog, Where is MapR today? Today, customers continue to expand their use cases and significantly increase value gained from data. Our customers tell us time and again that HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric meets the highest SLAs for availability across all verticals. The ability to plug in a different API or data structures saves time, allowing them to focus on their various use cases which would otherwise be spent on the setup and separate management of other point solutions. We have customers running production machine learning workloads for over six years, giving them an early mover advantage in their respective markets! HPE continues to update core features and add new features, which demonstrates our continued investment in HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric. Another positive proof point is our customer base from the MapR acquisition has continued to invest in our vision with the data fabric.  After the integration of MapR into HPE in 2019, we have seen the following with HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric:

  • New wins from customers around the world, which include one of the largest telecommunications providers in the U.S.
  • Increased commitment from our largest customers to HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric with:  
    • Continued renewals and expansions of licenses; the majority of customers who renewed procured additional licenses to handle greater data and computing needs
    • Plans to adopt our companion Kubernetes-based HPE Ezmeral Container Platform for their application modernization journey and separation of compute-store needs 
  • Confidence that the team can continue to deliver the innovation on the product roadmap with:
    • Expansion of the engineering team 
    • Shipment of new versions of the software (HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric 6.2 was updated and released on September 18th, 2020.)
    • Increased engineering resources to the integration with HPE Ezmeral Container Platform, providing a seamless environment for compute-store separation with the ability to transparently connect to the existing MapR installations
  • Expansion of our software partner program with the new HPE Ezmeral Marketplace. Our ecosystem partners are interested in our platform and strategy.
  • The continuation of a strong HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric roadmap for a new 7.0 release with continued support in the open-source community, as well as some big new features coming in 2021 so stay tuned for that release!

Data fabric: For today & tomorrow’s workloads

HPE continues the journey to deliver ubiquitous access and the capability to separate compute and storage with HPE Ezmeral. Customers enjoy one vendor for their continuous data service needs as well as container adoption needs no matter the deployment model.  Our goal is to make the platform as open as possible so  customers can bring open-source applications or deploy curated software from our software ISV partners as a part of the HPE Ezmeral Marketplace.

The HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric is here for today’s workloads and is ready for next generation workloads, may it be in high-performance computing, container workloads, or traditional application deployment models.
