HPE Ezmeral: Uncut

Data intelligence is the new oil

Data-Intelligence-HPE-DataFabric.pngYour enterprise runs on data. But if you are like most enterprises, it’s concealed in application-centric databases siloed across local, cloud, and remote locations. Just like oil, data needs a supporting infrastructure to ingest, process, and deliver the right data at the right time to applications, processes, and users. That means access to all the data, not just individual silos.

A data fabric is imperative

It’s no wonder enterprises today have initiatives to modernize data management. And the key aspect of modernization includes solutions containing a data fabric.[i] But what is a data fabric, and how can it resolve these challenges?

Business teams want real-time, integrated data from various data sources (including legacy, social media, IoT sensors, and the web) to make accurate business decisions. A data fabric creates a unified layer of data by ingesting data from any hardware, application, tool, and multiple ingest mechanisms. Next, it automates key processes that increase organizational agility and allows users to engage with the preparation process through self-service.

The key benefits of data fabric include:

  • A comprehensive view of all data, no matter its location or type
  • The ability to ingest, orchestrate, and transform data across multiple sources into real-time integrated dashboards, advanced analytics, and actionable insights
  • Democratization of data for all users, while maintaining compliance and data protection with enterprise-wide policies to define access control and encryption[ii]

Key data fabric differentiators

The term data fabric is used by different vendors to mean different things. For example, some vendors limit their definition to an abstraction and management layer. But HPE is different.

HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric is a modern, software-defined data store that has been validated across over 400 large-scale installations. The unified scale-out data store spans across multiple cloud and edge sites to meet the needs of any enterprise. The open platform enables system consolidation and policy-based access control to data sets on legacy, modern analytics, and AI apps. As data is ingested, it seamlessly scales without impacting SLAs and data resilience or requiring IT intervention.

 Key differentiators include the following:

  • Single source of truth

Organizing and aggregating any data type and source into a single source of truth means no one wastes time hunting for the data they need. Once the data is found, a single source eliminates the step of rationalizing the results across separate contradictory sources of information.  Removing this step improves employee productivity, streamlines your data estate, and breaks down data silos across your business.

  • Streamlined architectures and workflows

Figure 1 represents a real-world use case where a variety of systems (such as local files, NFS farms, and HDFS) are used to store data.

Figure 1. Data management architecture using multiple point solutionsFigure 1. Data management architecture using multiple point solutionsWhen these systems were added several years ago, they might have made sense. But today, they slow down time to insights. Before data can be shared, IT needs to copy data from one system to another to accommodate the needs of global teams. Each of these data silos comes with different security models, which create challenges and gaps into which data can be lost or exploited by malicious attacks.

Figure 2. Simplified architecture of HPE Ezmeral Data FabricFigure 2. Simplified architecture of HPE Ezmeral Data FabricIn Figure 2, you can immediately see how HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric streamlines data management architecture and workflow process. It uses automated policies to manage the entire data lifecycle, including masking raw data, processing, sharing, and placing it into cold storage without modifying your applications. IT saves time and effort with a single system that seamlessly scales up and down, eliminating the need to predefine storage capacity and manually intervene when those capacities are reached.

  • Open platform delivers data democratization

When it comes to data, think of each application as speaking its own language. This means you need to support a mosaic of tools and languages in addition to siloed systems.

HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric’s open platform is designed to support as many use cases as possible – allowing you to reduce the number of siloed systems, tools, and languages you need to purchase and maintain. With support across a wide range of APIs, tools, apps, and ingest mechanisms; HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric reduces data sprawl and point solution proliferation. Users and applications have direct access to a variety of apps and tools – eliminating the need for special libraries or code modification.

  • Global Namespace

The concept of a global namespace is not common, but it is extremely powerful for today’s global enterprise. When combined with an open platform, a global namespace delivers a unified infrastructure to applications and workloads, allowing them to directly access files, tables, and event streams -- even if the data lives on separate clusters, edge, or cloud deployments.

Figure 3. Global namespace delivers a unified infrastructure to apps and workloadsFigure 3. Global namespace delivers a unified infrastructure to apps and workloads

Global Namespace frees your developers to use familiar tools and languages, which accelerates innovation (Figure 3). It also simplifies large-scale system design. Imagine the impact on your business when legacy and modern applications can access the same data sets regardless of their location.

Deliver insights accross ALL your data

Move aside data; insights and intelligence are today’s new oil. Connecting data across core, cloud, and remote sources isn’t easy -- especially with today’s large data sets, complex data structures, and real-time requirements.  HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric helps integrate multiple data sources into a unified data layer that accelerates insights across all your data. That capability is important because integrated data leads to better business decisions, increased customer satisfaction, and a competitive advantage, which speeds innovation and growth.[iii]
