Oracle RAC Cloning and Scheduling Snapshots with HPE Nimble Linux Toolkit 2.2

Have you ever been stuck trying how to figure out how to clone an Oracle RAC database?  Have you ever wanted to schedule snapshots of your Oracle database and have them automatically replicated, all from your primary array?

With the latest release of our Oracle toolset, cloning an Oracle RAC database is now in your grasp along with some other nifty new features. Let’s take a look at some of the new features in the latest release of the HPE Nimble Linux Toolkit 2.2 (NLT 2.2) release.

Cloning an Oracle RAC Database

Cloning an Oracle RAC database has never been easier. With the Nimble Oracle App Data Manager tool that comes with NLT 2.2, you can clone your RAC database into a single instance database with a single command. The new database will be created with new ASM diskgroups, a new database SID, and similarly can be cloned to the same host, or to a second/different host.  The new single instance database can be easily converted back into a RAC database if required.

Let’s take a look at the steps to create a clone:

oracleracblog-img1.PNGclone commandAs you can see, we have a RAC ASM instance and one RAC instance called RACDB1. Our next step is to create an application consistent snapshot of our database. Since we are snapshotting a RAC database, our tool recognized that we didn’t specify hotbackup mode, and automatically placed the database into hotbackup mode prior to taking the snapshot and took it out of hotbackup mode after the snapshot was taken successfully.

The last command seen is the clone command. The command shown will create a clone of the RAC database using the “clone1” snapshot and call the new single instance database DB2.  

 Here is the output and result of clone command.

oracleracblog-img2.PNGclone command outputNote, immediately after the clone is complete, we display the full description of the new database including diskgroup names, volume names, size of the volumes etc.  In addition, you can now see the new DB2 single instance that is immediately available to use.

 The amount of time to clone the RAC database was approximately five minutes. The time to clone a database would stay the same regardless of the size of the database, number of luns that contains the database, and or the number of ASM diskgroups associated with the database.

 Nimble Protection Manager

In addition to cloning Oracle RAC databases, the latest release of Nimble Oracle App Data Manager also allows you to schedule and maintain your snapshots from the array. This new feature is called Nimble Protection Manager (NPM), and is quite easy to setup as per this step:

NPM allows you to schedule snapshots to be taken on a per volume collection basis. Using credentials created by NPM, the array will call out to the database host, place the database into hotbackup mode (if specified in a configuration file) and then take a snapshot. The volume collection has a specific retention setting, so only the specified number of snapshots will be kept.  In addition, as a part of your volume collection, each of these scheduled snapshots can be automatically replicated to another array for use in a dev/test environment or as a disaster recovery backup.

Once NPM is setup and running, every scheduled snapshot becomes cloneable as detailed here:

In this case the volume collection retention period keeps 4 of the latest snapshots.
