Using Read-only vCenter permission for InfoSight and VMVision data collection

A customer recently asked if he could leverage the power of InfoSight and VM Vision without providing the Nimble storage system administrator privileges to his vCenter environment.

Absolutely! Read privilege is all that is required to get VM Vision data collection enabled on the storage system. VMVision is a capability in InfoSight that allows users to troubleshoot storage I/O latency issues as well as issues caused by noisy neighbors at the VM level. It enables users to root cause latency issues at the host, network or storage layer.

Here are the steps to set this up on a Nimble OS 3.x array.

1.    Create a readonly user in vCenter

Administration > Users and Groups

Add a new user named "readonly" in vsphere.local

2.    Assign “Read Only”  to this user

Click on vCenter Inventory Lists > vCenter Servers > Your vCenter > Manage > Permissions

Add a permission to the readonly user by assigning Read-only role to the user.

3.    Create a vCenter Server in Nimble OS

The redesigned VMware Integration screens in Nimble OS 3.x allow registering a vCenter without registering the Nimble plugin or the VASA Provider. This feature can be used to collect VMware configuration data and per-VM monitoring statistics.

Note that a privileged user is required if you want to register the Nimble plugin or the VASA Provider. Refer to the VMware Integration guide for the details of the privileges required.

To add a vCenter with the readonly user, go to VMware Integration > Add vCenter Server.

Use readonly@vsphere.local as the user name. Uncheck all plugins. This will enable only InfoSight data collection.

4.    Log in to InfoSight and enable Streaming Stats

Once data collection is enabled on the storage system, Login to InfoSight to enable VM Vision.

Go to Administration > VMVision and click on Configure for the arrays you would like to enable the feature.
