Upgrade from 8.1 to 9

i tried to upgrade along to the manual

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01728034/c01728034.pdf

- i upgraded the cmc

- downloaded the patches

- checked the nodes for upgrades

upgrade fails because there is not enough diskspace!

i increased the volume from 5 to 50 GB but it is still not possible.

is there a posibility to upgrade tough? do i have to increase the  disks attached to the vsa?

thanks and regards!

Yes the VMDK files of the VSA's must be made bigger indeed... Do not forget to reboot the VSA's so that the SanIQ software recognizes that new free space...

I did this for the upgrade to 8.5 a long time ago and it worked for me so...

Good luck!

The VSA have 2 x 389 GB now

Is there a best practice for the new size?

Re: Upgrade from 8.1 to 9

I found the answer in this document:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01886197/c01886197.pdf

Increase the size of the OS disk on both VSAs (ESX) and Failover Managers (ESX) if upgrading

from pre-8.5 version

Due to changes in the size of the VMware tools that get installed during this software upgrade, you

must increase the size of the OS disk before upgrading the VSA (ESX) and the Failover Manager

(ESX). Additional space requirements are necessary for future software releases, as well. Therefore,

we recommend increasing the size of the OS disk to accommodate both requirements at this time.

NOTE: These instructions apply to VMware ESX Server. Other VMware products have similar

instructions for extending a virtual disk. Please consult the appropriate VMware documentation for

the product you are using

To increase the OS disk size on the VSA:

1.

Using the CMC, power off the VSA.

2.

Open the VI Client and select VSA > Edit Settings > Hardware.

3.

Select Hard disk 1 (verify that the Virtual Device Node is SCSI (0:0)).

4.

Under Disk provisioning, change the provisioned size to 8 GB.

5.

Click OK.

6.

Repeat these steps for Hard disk 2 (verify the Virtual Device Node is SCSI (0:1))

7.

Using the VI Client, power on the VSA.

8.

Find the VSA in the CMC and apply the 9.0 upgrade.

To increase the OS disk size on the Failover Manager:

1.

Using the CMC, power off the Failover Manager.

7.

Using the VI Client, power on the Failover Manager.

8.

Find the Failover Manager in the CMC and apply the 9.0 upgrade.

Re: Upgrade from 8.1 to 9

There are always 2 VMDK files for the OS image, the 3rd VMDK file is normally the biggest file that will be used as the SAN volume... It is only the 2 first volumes that need to be made 8GB big for the OS... All the rest of free space you can use as SAN storage space...

Re: Upgrade from 8.1 to 9

The upgrade process from 8.1 to any higher version seems to be very troublesome.

I have removed one of the VSAs from the cluster and replaced it with a completely fresh SAN/iQ V9 image.

Let Network RAID move the data and replace the other VSA.

Sometimes in-between I've rip-and replaced the FOM the same way.

This week I've upgraded both VSAs to the latest SAN/iQ level, added a third VSA and removed the FOM from the management group.

Besides some upgrade problems which I avoided due to early feedback here in the forums (thanks to those who reported it) I beleive it is a great product!!

Re: Upgrade from 8.1 to 9

I am running 3 VSA's at home since version 8.0. I upgraded meanwhile to 8.1 to 8.5 and now 9.0 and 9.0.1...

All without any issues, my SAN volumes have an uptime of almost 2 years now!

You just have to follow the right steps...
