HPE Synergy blades and storage compatibility with openstack and rhev.

Hi Commnunity, 

I would like to know about the openstack and rhev compatabity with HPE Synergy. 

We planning to setup a single frame HPE Synergy for Openstack/Rhev + VMware with local storage. module D3940.

I am trying to explore the feasibility of this plan. Is there anyone can advice me with best possible components. I am expecting to use primary component as given below;

a) SY 480 - 4 Modules (for VMware)

b) SY 480 - 4 Modules (for Openstack)

c) SY 480 - 2 Modules (for RHEV)

d) D3940 - 2 Modules (each dedicated for VMware and Openstack - Ceph)

Please advise. Thank you.

Hello Digishamil,

You have an interesting project ahead of you combining the different cloud & virtualization solutions within 1 HPE Synergy Frame.

As a starter you might like to review this page: https://www.hpe.com/us/en/servers/server-operating-systems.html and review from there the supportability for the different virtualization solutions that HPE is offering.

To give some guidance on your suggested proposal:

4 computes for VMware; this should be possible; with VMware vSAN you preferred should have 4 nodes with storage consumed from the D3940 to make it enough redundant and to provide RAID5 level of redundancy on your vSAN storage.

4 computes for OpenStack: this might be an interesting one as it all depends on the vendor that you plan to use for your OpenStack distro; you could use HPE Helion OpenStack but the controlplane would require minimal 3 nodes and you could then only have 1 compute node up & running with only local storage (not really redundant) but for getting started this would work out very well; you would place as example the local OS on 600GB 15k disks  on the local server and per node 2x1.2TB disks minimal for the logging. For the compute node you could only use 600GB or larger disks.
This might need more tweaking and architecting then what we can offere through this forum at this moment.
We have as well HPE Pointnext Advisory & Professional Services available to help you on such an quick design if desired.

2 nodes for RHEV: this could be achieved but again you would only run on local disks as there is no central storage available easily. 2 nodes is however a little bit on the skinny side to get something usefull up & running in production especially if you are looking for redundancy and central available storage.

As you can see its would be difficult to get something good and reliable out for your current proposal but you could easily get started with VMware with or without vSAN and or HPE Helion OpenStack as well.
However for CEPH you would need at least another 3 (storage OSD) nodes so this might be a tight fit.
