Oneview 4.10.01
Hi,
I have a Synergy enviornment that has an old firmware... the current firmware level is 4.10.01-0348545
Questions that I have;
1 - How many firmware upgrades do I have to do to get to version 6.0? I assume I can not go from 4.10 to 6.0?
2 - If I have to do multiple upgrades, can I upgrade the infrastructure all the way to version to 6.0 before I upgrade the compute nodes? i ask this to minimize outages.
3 - I currently don't have HPE support. Should I get that before I upgrade the firmware, or is it safe to prceed without the support.
4 - Any other word of wisdom.
I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Re: Oneview 4.10.01
1 - How many firmware upgrades do I have to do to get to version 6.0? I assume I can not go from 4.10 to 6.0?
Ans:
First of all 4.10.01 is End-of-support life for OneView and Synergy Infra.
Please note you can directly upgrade to the latest version of the Appliance or One-view is 4.20.01.01
From 4.10.01 you can jump to: 4.20.01.01
From 4.20.01.01 you can go to 4.20.03
From 4.20.03 you need to 5.20.01 and
From 5.20.01 you can go to 6.0 or 6.1 release.
Hence it is 4 hop count procedure.
Please note: This may take upto 24 hours and only draw back is appliance will not be available during upgrade procedure. Other the other side, Blades and ICMs will continue to run.
2 - If I have to do multiple upgrades, can I upgrade the infrastructure all the way to version to 6.0 before I upgrade the compute nodes? <<<<<<<<<<< YES.
Since the upgrade procedure is sequential.
First - Composer/OneView upgrade.
Second - Shared Infra upgrade (Interconnect modules & FLMs)
Third - Blades (one can chose to upgrade the Blade(s) individually as per their planned maintenance window.
3 - I currently don't have HPE support. Should I get that before I upgrade the firmware, or is it safe to prceed without the support.
Ans: HPE Always recommends to have an active contract with its hardware infra, so that you can log a case if anything goes wrong during upgrade or product lifecycle.
4 - Any other word of wisdom.
Ans: One must have OneView backup before they upgrade anything on Synergy platform.

Re: Oneview 4.10.01
A few things:
From 5.20.01 you can go to 6.0 or 6.1 release.
This is incorrect. You cannot update to 6.0 from 5.20, nor can you update from 5.20 to 6.10. You must update from 5.20 to 5.40, then you can go to 6.00. 5.20, 5.40 and 6.00 are all Milestone Releases, which we allow direct updating to. Please review the HPE Synergy Update Path support page for more details. We also have a site that shows what Synergy Baselines that are supported with the various OneView releases that you will need to review.
Once you are at 4.20 or newer, you should use the Update Readiness Checker to help identify known issues that would prevent successful OneView (i.e. Synergy Composer) updates.

Re: Oneview 4.10.01
Hello. You must plan OneView upgrades while staying in sync with the supported infrastructure (and in turn the infrastructure and computes must also stay in sync). For example:
Composer 4.10.01-0348545 & Synergy Custom SPP Version 2018.06.20180709
4.10.01 (current) => 4.10.03 -or- 4.20.01.01 => 4.20.03 => Update SPP Firmware 2019.03.20200324a => 5.20.01 => 5.4 => 5.60.01 => Update SPP Firmware 2021.02.01 => 6.0 => 6.1
If you can take offline some or all of the computes; sometimes you may skip the extra compute firmware and drivers (and/or OS version) updates. Note that there is no overlap of supported OS versions from 2018 to 2021, so that is a significant area for planning too.
