You'll still get alarms from polling. Don't have to use SNMP traps.

some alarms only avaialble from traps tho, correct?

Yep. But for device up/down case, that will come from polling. Some things are faster with traps, and some things are only via traps. But I've never been much of a one for relying on traps in environments I've worked in. I trust polling a bit more
