All you need to know about Model Documentation in HP Service Health Reporter

Vineetha_V on ‎03-27-2014 03:07 PM

Dimensional modeling is a popular modeling technique used to achieve Business Intelligence (BI) goals… HP Service Health Reporter follows this technique for providing BI/reporting solutions for your IT Performance data. We often have customer requests asking for a documentation of the data models available (helps to quickly assess presence of necessary data cubes/metrics relevant for their specific use cases, set scope for customizations that may be required…).

The data model for every domain content in SHR is also published as a .html within each content package and is locally accessible on the SHR Server. The model document covers the list of Dimension, Bridge, and Fact tables (both raw and summary tables) defined in the content pack with required descriptions of the fields within.

For instance, the model documentation of SHR System Management content is published at {PMDB_HOME}\packages\SystemManagement\CoreSystemManagement.ap\doc\CoreSystemManagement_MODEL.html

Similarly, this is available for all the other content packs in SHR.

What we would also like to share is the fact that this documentation is automatically created as you author a domain content using CDE – so be rest assured that as you build your own custom SHR integration with a new domain content, the model gets documented for you automatically …

How about custom data integrations (say from a 3rd party data source) into SHR? The corresponding stage interface document (which provides format and description of “input” data for SHR tables) is also published as a .html file in the same location; it details the structure of stage tables for that content pack along with sample .csv format for each possible data set (fact, dimension or bridge).

For example, the stage interface of SHR System Management content is published @ the following location on the SHR server-{PMDB_HOME}\packages\SystemManagement\CoreSystemManagement.ap\doc\ CoreSystemManagement_INTERFACE.html

The dimensional data model is published in the form of a Bus Matrix as well (as per standard data warehouse guidelines). The Bus Matrix is a critical design tool that represents the core business content and the associated dimensionality. It enables creation of consistent data models which ensure that data can be integrated across the enterprise. The SHR bus matrix is shipped within CDE and be located at:

{CDE_HOME}/doc/bus_matrix/SHR_Bus_Matrix.html

It is a good practice to reference the Bus Matrix and leverage common conformed dimensions across data models as far as possible.

Documenting the Semantic Layer/Business View:

If you need to share documents with users who may not have access to Business Objects, consider saving them as Portable Document Format or .pdf. Here is a visual walkthrough on how to extract a list of all Objects, Conditions, Hierarchies, Tables, Joins, Contexts and Parameters from a Universe using Designer.

Login to the Universe Designer on the SHR Server by selecting Start->All Programs->Business Objects XI3.1->Business Objects Enterprise->Designer from the Start Menu

Select File->Import to import the required Universe from the repository.

Provide the options that need to be saved in Universe documentation by selecting Tools ->Options->Print/PDF. The following are the list of options available:

See the following table which provides more detail on the list of options:

After selecting the options, Click “OK”. Save the universe as a .pdf by choosing Select File -> Save As and selecting the .pdf format as shown below:

Click Save. You now have the Universe captured in a .pdf!
