Resource metering in the cloud

Measured service has become an important tenet in IT, especially in the cloud. Resource metering for showback and chargeback purposes provides you with comprehensive understanding of the use of IT services and resources and their cost. Measuring and reporting brings transparency and accountability to how IT supports business objectives and how the business units or organizations within an enterprise make use of the services.

The purpose of resource metering and reporting are:

  • Making business units responsible for their usage of IT and its services
  • Providing visibility on the reasons behind the costs of IT
  • Allowing IT to be agile and respond swiftly to unexpected customer demand

In a cloud deployment managed HPE Cloud Service Automation solution, HPE IT Business Analytics (ITBA) provides the capability to generate resource usage, utilization and billing statements for organizations and cloud users. This is enabled by integrating ITBA with HPE Cloud Optimizer.

By integrating with Cloud Optimizer, ITBA provides the following capabilities:

  • Store detailed resource usage information obtained from Cloud Optimizer in the existing "Service Provider Billing" entity
  • Store detailed utilization information obtained from Cloud Optimizer in the existing "Service Provider Utilization" entity
  • Store virtual machine information obtained from Cloud Optimizer in the existing "Node" entity
  • Build the connection between CSA subscription and the real usage obtained from Cloud Optimizer
  • Generate "Resource Usage and Utilization" and “Billing Statement” reports for the organizations and cloud users

Behind the scenes

Here’s how ITBA and Cloud Optimizer come together to provide you resource metering information in the cloud.

Cloud Optimizer is a comprehensive capacity planning and management tool for virtual and cloud environments. Cloud Optimizer monitors the underlying virtual infrastructure of the private cloud environment and provides you with capacity optimization, best-fit placement, modeling and performance monitoring capabilities. It helps you to optimize the virtual environment for improved utilization, reduce wastage, eliminate VM sprawl and plan for future growth.

You can extend the capabilities of Cloud Optimizer with its rich API. It provides API for intelligent placement suggestion and VM right-sizing recommendations. Additionally, Cloud Optimizer exposes REST API to retrieve VM configuration information, usage and utilization details. ITBA makes use of the REST API to retrieve relevant VM information and usage details to generate reports for the CSA organizations and users.

ITBA integration capability with Cloud Optimizer 3.0 is available with ITBA 10.0 content pack 0002 onwards.

Here are a couple of sample reports that you can generate in ITBA

Billing Statement for Cloud Services

Note: ITBA has pre-configured default prices to calculate the cost of private cloud resources (CPU, Memory, Disk) supported by Cloud Optimizer. You can however change this. For instructions, refer to the ITBA Content Reference Guide (requires HP Passport credentials).

Resource Usage and Utilization

These reports gives you finer visibility into the resource usage and the cost incurred by the cloud consumers and the organizations.
