The following is a guest post by Tom Jones, Manager of Cloud Services and Infrastructure Engineering of Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (HII).

Newport News Shipbuilding is no stranger to complicated or demanding projects.  As the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy submarines, we encounter extremely difficult challenges and innovation opportunities in day to day operations. In order to meet those needs, our IT operations need to keep us on track and up and running in order to meet strict regulations and deadlines.

Prior to working with HPE Software, our IT processes for provisioning resources required significant labor investments and were not consistent in their output. Our IT team knew it was time to move away from resource siloes to establish a Cloud Services team that focused on IT automation. The vision of this team was to create automation processes to quickly deliver secure and consistent resources internally and to our engineering and manufacturing partners across NNS.

In order to realize our transformation goals, NNS decided to partner with HPE Software Services and Raindance Consulting to implement HPE Cloud Service Automation (CSA), HPE Operations Orchestration, HPE Server Automation, and HPE Database and Middleware Automation. These products are providing significant improvements in our IT management system and we look to extend these capabilities as we integrate with public cloud service offerings.

The primary goal for our cloud services team was to enable speedy setup and teardown of systems for production, testing, and development. By architecting a private cloud, NNS created a virtualized infrastructure and delivered IaaS which reduced provisioning from weeks to days, and in some cases even hours. Working in highly regulated client environments, we also needed to ensure that any public cloud resources and providers were achieving security capability requirements.

Our team is focused on providing significant improvements to our IT environment, reducing unnecessary costs and improving our time-to-results. The resource silos we relied on have now converged into an integrated team that utilizes the HPE automation and orchestration products to shrink our provisioning time from weeks to less than one day. We are migrating from a lengthy server design review process to operating a catalog of standardized templates, better maintaining our private cloud and running self-service portals for our internal IT system administrators and software development team. The IT team is now enabled for rapid stand-up and teardown of development environments and delivers more capabilities in the same or smaller data center footprint.

Joining efforts with HPE, we have successfully completed automation and orchestration of the following IT processes: IP address reservation with DHCP, DNS server name reservation, server, storage and user provisioning, agent provisioning (inventory, production scheduling, security, performance, monitoring, backup, restore, and configuration management), server patching and server snapshotting.  We are now focused on automating and orchestrating our databases and applications and will then target the transformation of other IT service delivery with production roll-outs across our entire IT environment. We look to introduce the availability of the public-cloud portal in the near term and create a seamless user experience for both on- and off-premise resources to meet the high infrastructure standards of our business and engineering users.
