Handle configuration changes effectively - technical white paper

Whether you follow ITIL® or other industry best practices or standards, configuration management is a fundamental process enabling the management and improvement of other ITSM processes. It provides an accurate picture of your environment and ensures the integrity of all involved data along the entire lifecycle of your services. But how can you get your configuration data under control?


Having your configuration data under control comes along with many advantages, including but not limited to:

  • Better business and IT alignment through more transparency of dependencies from services, over applications down to the infrastructure.
  • High quality of service - all services, processes, tools and involved people share the same, accurate and up-to-date context.
  • Improved change management, resulting in the detection, control and finally reduction of unplanned changes, for example.

The supporting system for service asset and configuration management is the configuration management system (CMS). HP's ITSM solution places HP Universal CMDB Configuration Manager (HP CM) as the application for the CMS. It integrates with HP Service Manager (HP SM) and leverages the capabilities of HP's Universal CMDB.


HP CM helps you realizing the above advantages and more by adding CI state management and policy-based change control to your ITSM solution. And, dependent on the level of control your organization wants to apply, you can chose between two different options for adoption: whether to use HP CM as a change review point or as a change control point.
