Introducing HP Propel on-premise: give your users a shortcut to information, decisions and actions

What should IT’s strategy be today?

In the past 15-20 years, IT has heard one singular message –it needs to run itself as a business. Teams are hearing this advice and imperative given from all sides, including analysts and vendors. This is so IT can master the art of understanding the demand from the business and develop services and applications that meet these business needs.


At the same time, business needs are usually several steps ahead of IT’s ability to fulfill them. The main reasons are commonly a lack of resources—both financial and human. This can be contributed in part to IT’s low maturity and rigidity when it comes to following certain process. New technologies such as cloud, mobility, social and big data forever changed IT’s reality and new competitors emerged that IT organizations would have never expected. As a result, shadow IT skyrocketed and business-users’ loyalty to other technology providers has started marginalizing their own IT organization. Often these providers are small, niche companies that offer very specialized services or just a few mobile apps.


Finding the IT competitive advantage

What is today’s IT competitive advantage? What about innovation – does it still need to happen in IT and does it still involve developing unique services for unique business? Most IT departments are already developing new cloud services and new mobile apps. These all use big data and social technologies—but is it enough?


According to a 2013 Gartner survey,  more and more IT spending takes place outside of IT control, and still 50 percent of surveyed CEOs expected more strategic value from IT. Is IT playing a catchup again and if yes after whom?


Cloud computing and other new technologies have lowered the barrier to entry for application development. Chances are that for every need or a wish your business users have, there is a service available already to fulfill the needs. These services are easy to find and easy to buy. No IT organization can create all services that their businesses need by themselves.  It is predicted that in the future, IT won’t do everything that it does now. So, what will IT do?



IT will offer more services every year and ordering and consuming these services will be more convenient than searching for similar services on the Internet. As Scott Lundstrom, VP and GM of IDC said, “IT assets matter less, while IT agility matters more. One can create an environment where everything is a service. It’s not just about cost, but rather time”. Every IT department will be more dependent on external service suppliers, but in this way IT will be able to offer what’s needed. Until now IT was dreadful about the idea to include even more external service suppliers into their ecosystem. Introducing HP Propel on-premise

Yesterday, HP Software announced an on-premise version of HP Propel, a solution for transforming IT into a service broker. HP Propel helps break the deadlock between IT and end users.


On one side there is IT, which is facing the following dilemmas:

  • The team is super busy and trying to do it all
  • The department is required to stay within the allowed security and governance compliance circle
  • The department is trying to deliver a helpful and engaging experience, automate service requests fulfillments and integrate multiple suppliers without losing control and providing everything on mobile devices.

On the other side we have the end user who does not want to differentiate between “what I want” and “what I think I should be able to have”. The end user is surrounded by rich offerings of goods and services, used to constant consumption of what they need, when they need it.

Now, IT has to deliver business users demands at the speed of business – which is faster than ever. HP Propel enables IT organizations to deliver and broker traditional, cloud, and hybrid IT services. IT is now accepting that the new strategy is around “what else can we do for our business users” and not only about building unique capabilities.  It has been proven that these capabilities erode over time. With this shift,  IT has now capability to provide the desired consumer experience and more services. Part of these services will be from IT’s own repertoire and part will be from external suppliers. Propel’s key capabilities

The unique capabilities provided by HP Propel, including integration with HP Autonomy IDOL, empower customers to:

  • Increase time to value by quickly assessing capabilities of external service providers and making them available to the business
  • Enhance service quality by capturing 100 percent of the IT customer’s demand and feedback
  • Improve consumer engagement  and satisfaction with a single, unified, app-store like experience and
  • Reduce IT costs by quickly on-boarding and integrating internal and external systems, which drives business efficiency.

With HP Propel on premise, IT provides a single destination for business users to request and consume their needed services. Its single portal and catalog are easy to find and very intuitive to use. If you have experienced online shopping, you will find the experience quite easy.  The portal is super easy to customize according to users’ wishes and corporate identity through UI themes and widgets.

The single-service catalog aggregates services from underlying catalogs, such as ITSM or cloud services catalogs. Service aggregation is achieved through federation principles, which enables fast implementation without “rip-and-replace”. The Propel catalog uses your existing fulfillment engines to fulfill the requests and enables unified experience, regardless of the ordered service.

Ordering services from a single catalog is just a beginning of engaging user experience – fulfillments must be automated, error-free and fast. HP Propel orchestrates service delivery– a single ordered service can be a composition of multiple services which are fulfilled by several backend systems, internal and external to IT. These fulfillment complexities are hidden from the end-user who simply enjoys one-click consumption.

The backbone of the entire solution and the link between portal and fulfillment systems is Propel Service Exchange. The portal with the catalog and all the backend systems are integrated into the Service Exchange only once. This eliminates the burden of integrating every ITSM or cloud provisioning system into the catalog separately and enables business users to order all services from a single place. Service Exchange will route and orchestrate a single order to a single or multiple suppliers and will exchange messages between portal, catalog and fulfillment systems in both ways. Service Exchange comes with built-in content, in the first releases these are adapters for HP Service Manager and HP Cloud service Automation (CSA). In future releases, the plan is to have more out-of-the-box adapters as well as SDK (software development kit) available.

Service Exchange, as the name suggests, can exchange messages between any IT Management system, and so drastically simplify the integration between IT tools. As in the previous example, every IT Management system can be integrated to Service Exchange only once, and then the case exchange occurs within Service Exchange according to modeled business processes.





Thoughts on IT innovation and creating an advantage for the future

To compete effectively, IT will need to integrate more external service suppliers into its ecosystem. It will also need to manage them successfully and provide a consumerized end-user experience on par with Internet shops and forums. IT innovation will be increasingly outside of IT itself and will be tailored to new consumption circumstances.

IT will need to develop skills to select the best services suppliers at the best price and service levels and integrate their services and offer to their business users. Minimizing costs and risks will remain among top priorities for IT. The advantage will be in intimately knowing the needs and wishes of business users and quickly ramping up in- house services. Partnering with business at the speed of business and becoming a true service broker will ultimately create business value and increase the IT’s influence and lasting advantage.

Great article! I think that the social factor helps to give IT a face to the end-users. However, I think that many enterprise solutions are lagging significantly behind the consumer market. In many cases, by the time that the enterprise solution catches up, the social factor has shifted. Therefore, when an enterprise solution is presented to an enterprise, there is a huge under-whelming effect.


I agree that the competitive advantage  lies far less with IT assets than with management and integration of data. HP Propel sounds promising!

Good article! IT Departments need to focus on business enablement, being partners with the business instead of just trying to justify their cost. They need to understand what the business is trying to do and practively advise. The broker model is a good first step as long as IT departments are experts on the outsourced services and insist on visibility into the vendor's performance.

Propel shows a smart new direction for HP thinking and management. ETL and bringing data together is essential. As functional tools actually serve to seperate people, the data and information these tools provide can serve to bring group outcomes together. Propel will help with this if it can be supported, has a good and reliable process and remains scalable. Very exciting.
