Not Quite the ‘Born on the 4th of July’ Blog;

Brian McQuillan ‎07-12-2013 03:52 PM - edited ‎07-09-2015 08:22 PM

I sit here writing this on the 4th of July which, for the Americans in my audience, is a day of celebration......

And, for those who are not U.S. citizens, you may wonder why this Day of Independence happened at all........  Well let me start with a couple of thoughts. When an organisation, such as the British Empire, 1) gets too large too quickly, without de-centralising accountability to make decisions at levels best suited for the local community and 2) insists on centralising all aspects of life and regulation at one central point without reference to local sensibilities, well, you see what can happen.

Tea, anyone?

Granted, this is a simplification, but its lesson holds true enough to be seriously considered by those of you who manage and run global IT organisations. Especially when you look at, say, the PMO and the processes you have to put in place corporate-wide to govern how you manage and report on your projects.

Are all of the processes you need to manage and govern really identical across a global enterprise? Or is it better to tailor them for different local situations, and if so, how do you try and harmonise them as best you can while still maintaining an element of central direction and reporting?

Maintaining visibility and accountability is important, but, maybe not always to the point of locking everyone in the same straitjacket. Knowing the important metrics and controls you need to run the business and the PMO, and devolving the rest of the decisions and process to the people on the ground will stand you in greater stead in the long run than “one size fits all”.
