Take control of Oracle license reconciliation with HP Software

‎06-13-2014 12:00 PM - edited ‎10-22-2015 11:21 AM

With our latest release of Universal Discovery for Oracle LMS 1.1, we’ve gone to the next level to stay in sync with Oracle for being a “verified” product in the Oracle LMS space, as well as making sure our customers have the tools at their fingertips to ensure compliance at all times.

Oracle is enriching its flagship database product with newer releases and newer versions of management packs and options. Unfortunately,  its software licensing rules are getting increasingly more complex to include detailed information about CPU metrics, partitioning hardware and what management packs or options are enabled. The complexity introduced into IT by unending M&A, as well as outsourcing and datacenters consolidation activities further extends the challenge of maintaining ongoing compliance. This is due to a lack of visibility and actionable insight into the ever-changing IT estate—resulting in unmitigated risks and unscheduled costs.

There is no “easy button” to manage this complexity. Fortunately Universal Discovery for Oracle LMS, a discovery tool verified by Oracle LMS to discover deployment and usage data for the Oracle Database product can help.

The latest version of Universal Discovery for Oracle LMS, version 1.10, comes packaged with many enhancements to support Oracle’s latest database usage collection requirements. These include, but are not limited to, support for detecting usage of options such as

  • Multi-tenant
  • Flashback Data Archive (a feature of Advanced Compression)
  • Advanced Row Compression (feature of Advanced Compression introduced in Oracle 12c)
  • OEM Packs Licensed Links in OEM 12c Cloud Control amongst others

Also included are enhancements to better detect usage of existing features such as Fast Incremental Backup on Physical Standby (a feature of Active Data Guard), SecureFiles Intelligent Encryption using Transparent Data Encryption (a feature of Advanced Security) and better OLAP usage detection.

Oracle understands the complexity introduced by its enterprise products and licensing rules, and provides its customers with different options to manage that complexity. To detect database instances and usage, customers have the option to run a myriad of in-house manually-maintained stand-alone scripts. These scripts may or may not be up-to-date on Oracle’s latest and required data collection mechanisms and can lead to incorrect data collection and liability.

Or, these customers can leverage a third-party discovery tool such as Universal Discovery. UD stays up-to-date with Oracle’s data collection requirements that change from time to time. It does this  while also having the additional benefit of being the one application, hardware, and software utilization discovery tool providing dependency mapping and inventory discovery capabilities across applications from multiple vendors (e.g. Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, IBM, HP, Symantec, SAP, VMware, etc.) deployed on a variety of partitioning, virtualization and clustering technologies.

I encourage you to take a look at HP Universal Discovery for additional information on HP Universal Discovery for Oracle Licensing Management Software.
