Booting from Ignite Tape.

Suppose when i stop the normal Boot Process at ISL Prompt, and there i give the command
#search to find the sequential device i.e tape device,

Now this is not an recovery , Just to Boot the system from ignite recovery tape.

Suppose the Boot Option of Tape deviceis P2.
Then i Boot the system with

# boot P2.

So after booting the system with the ignite recovery tape, should i get the normal prompt, i.e runlevel 3 or recovery console, or console? i am bit confused?

Re: Booting from Ignite Tape.

When you boot from tape it loads ignite installation with predefined values for system recovery - actual system information: volume groups, ip's, ...

There is also an option to exit to shell and use some commands. This is a recovery console.

Re: Booting from Ignite Tape.

I typically create my ignite tape with the -I option so it runs interactive. If not you have to watch the screen so you can interupt and then use the Ignite installer screen manuall.

from the make_tape_recovery man page.
-I Causes the system recovery process to be interactive when
booting from the tape. By default, when the systems boots
from the recovery tape, it will allow ten (10) seconds to
interrupt the automatic recovery process in order to make
modifications interactively. When the -I option is
specified, booting from the tape will always present the
interactive menus. This option is useful when making
configuration changes during the recovery, and may also help
prevent an accidental system recovery from a recovery tape.

Re: Booting from Ignite Tape.

But running a recovery console (based on a virtual "RAM disk") from a tape may be v*e*r*y**s*l*o*w... better to boot from a CD/DVD.

Hope this helps!

Re: Booting from Ignite Tape.

By default, the machine should just start booting from, then loading from the tape.

If you do not see Ignite progress messages via the console, something is likely wrong.

You do have 10 seconds to interrupt and interact with the recovery, otherwise it continues.

'Now this is not an recovery , Just to Boot the system from ignite recovery tape.' Hmm... Not really. Booting a recovery tape will install it. Hence, it will really be a recovery.

Post some output of what you are seeing, is it unexpected?

Re: Booting from Ignite Tape.

Indrajit,

Yes, you should get the normal multi-user login prompt.

If you are restoring to another server ( not the same one you made the tape on), then change the Servers'
hostname
IP address
