Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

Hi:

I have run make_tape_recovery in an L2000 box and tried to boot this tape in an L1500 box to clone the first one on it. When doing so, I get this error message:

HARD Booted.

Ignite tape is completely consistent, as I checked by copying LIF area to destination machine and by inspecting files stored by tar.

I found some posts suggesting PDC firmware or Ignite version problems, but it is not my case. Other things I saw in the posts I found are irrelevant. Any hint you can send about how to troubleshhot this wiill be sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

Hello,

Does the L1500 boot normally on an installation cd of hpux or on a disk system?

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

I'm wondering if the PDC and ISL revisions on those servers is up to date.

The message you've posted ini does not strike me as related. Seems the system is complaining about how it was booted. and its non-critical.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

Answering previous:

1. Yes, it boots normaly from boot hard drives

2. Though the messages says it is non-critical, in fact it doesn't boot from tape and (of course) doesn't reinstall OS.

3. As stated before, PDC and ISL firmware were both checked using information found in other posts.

Any additional help is appreciated.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

The tape drive on which you try to boot is external?

Did you have tested it on this machine?

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

If You mind trying - do a make_boot_tape and check if the same happens, maybe I somehow doesn't like the WINSTALL kernel on the tape.
yesterday I stood at the edge. Today I'm one step ahead.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

Hi Jose,

Maybe this will help,

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000073838484

The itrc doc id is KBRC00010178.

Hope this helps.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

It seems to be the case, Sanjav. Source box has B.2.x version. I'll upgrade it and then test again to see if it fixes

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

Hi,

It is not only the version of the Ignite software that matters, but also the kernel driver for the hardware installed. If you are preparing the tape on a server with some old hardware and are trying to use that tape on a hardware that is relatively new, with some newer card / controllers, you may have the same problem.

You may want to take a look at the controllers in your new system and see if they are different from the old one. It is not always a good idea to clone a server, if the hardware difference is much.

Hope this helps.

Re: Error booting an Ignite tape on another box

The L1500 box if its a modern L series(never seen that number) should be very close in hardware compatability to the L2000.

The Ignite Version upgrade to version 6 should increase your chances of success much more.

There is a less hardware dependent way to go about this. Golden Images.

Speaking of Search Engines, itrc's appears to be malfunctioning or I'd provide a few links.
