Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Hi,

I have done fbackup up of two harddisk system (two vg groups) and did a frecover into 1 harddisk. When I try to do a vgdisplay, there is an error "Possible error in the volume group minor number; Please check and make sure the group minor number is unique"

I read up in the forum and tried to remove /etc/lvmtab and do a vgscan but got a error of a similar type.

I can see all the files in the two vg group.

Do we need to create a second vg group after make recovery?

Thanks in advance

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Hi,

Can you give the output of
strings /etc/lvmtab
ll /dev/*/group
vgdisplay -v|grep "VG N"
vgdisplay -v|grep "PV N"

The minor number of group file must be unique (0x000000)

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

first check to see that you infact do not have duplicate minor numbers:

ls -la /dev/vg*/group

Check the 0x number. The first two digits after the 0x are the minor numbers. They should be unique.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies, but currently after i logged out, all I got was a white and black criss cross screen instead of the normal cde login screen. Once I managed to resolve that I will reply. Thanks again.

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Hi,
To branch off a bit, right now, it seems my hard disk have some corrupted files. In single user mode, I am unable to mount /usr and I got the error 'vxfs mount: /dev/vg00/lvol7 is corrupted. Needs checking.' As such, I am thinking of redoing the frecover on the disk. Can I just go ahead or do I need to reformat the harddisk?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Do a fsck from single user:

fsck -F vxfs /dev/vg04/rlvol7

I have added a second harddisk and redid make_tape_recovery, i did a pvcreate on the second harddisk, and create a vg01 then did the frecover, but in the end I can see all the filesyst) do not exist. I can also see the vg01 filesystem but when I do a bdf, just the vg00 filesystems appear.

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Hi,

Can you do as below:
cp /etc/lvmtab /etc/lvmtab.bak
rm /etc/lvmtab
vgscan -v
ioscan -fnCdisk
pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c?t?d? (all of your disks from the ioscan output)

Was your old system mirrored or not. May be you will have to vgreduce it.

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Here is a more basic question: Did you backup vg00 with this fbackup job? vg00 contains hardware-specific device files and LVM files that will be broken if you restore everything in vg00 onto the new disk. If you need vg00 restored onto a new disk, use make_tape_recovery and not fbackup (or cpio or tar or any other file backup tool).

Re: Frecover a 2 harddisk backup into 1 harddisk

Hi,

The system I am doing backup on has two harddisk, two vg

groups, vg00 resides on one harddisk and vg01 on the

other.

Using make_tape_recovery, I used the command

'make_tape_recovery -A -v -d /dev/rmt/0m'

and also did fbackup with the command 'fbackup -vf

/dev/rmt/0m -i /'

The idea was to clone the system on two new harddisk to

act as spares for hotswapping in case there is any

failure.

I used the make_rec tape to boot and restore the

os(letting it run without interrupting the boot

sequence).

I am able to login after that and with vgdisplay, I see

two vg groups. Below are the system info,

# strings /etc/lvmtab
/dev/vg00
/dev/dsk/c3t6d0
# ll /dev/*/group

So my question here is what is the procedure in this

case to clone the system?

Is there straight forward way to clone to new hard

disks?

i.e. Just do a make_recovery and all the vg groups can

be created and cloned?

After I did the make_recovery, the vg01 was visible but

the physical volume have to be created as well as the

logical volume before I can frecover the vg01. I

actually remove the vg01(recovered by make_rec) first

and recreate them after I created the physical volume on

the second harddisk.

Thanks Bill for your reminder! Yes I did backup vg00 in

the fbackup. Does this mean I only need to frecover just

the vg01 files? I do notice that my /etc/hosts files is

different between the one recovered by make_rec and

frecover. Is it sufficient to recover vg00 just with

make_recovery?

Thanks to Rasheed and Alan as well!
