Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

I have a few more Q ...

1. Is ignite for whole system backup??

2. When we do make_tape_recovery shd we stop applications and database??

3. When we do recovery during boot, we give "boot P#" ... When we boot from tape , is the system automatically recovered or some steps are left after booting??
I mean after this if we remove the tape , is everything ok??

Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

Hi:

> Is ignite for whole system backup??

No, Ignite is intended for the backup and recovery of the standard operating system logical volumes, usually wholly contained in vg00. While it is possible to include other files, directories, or filesystems or volume groups, the tool is designed to allow the cloning or recovery of an operating system environment; not a whole application system.

> When we do make_tape_recovery shd we stop applications and database??

In the context of the above, no. That is, if you don't attempt to backup databases (and I hope you would NOT!) then there is no reason to stop any processes during the creation of an Ignite recovery tape.
> When we boot from tape, is the system automatically recovered or some steps are left after booting??

When you boot from your tape you have the ability to perform an unattending installation or to select an "Advanced Installation" mode. In the "Advanced" mode you can choose whether or not you want to clone to different hardware; whether or not you want to resize filesystems; whether or not you want to automatically (vg)import existing volume groups.

To make an Ignite tape that consists only of vg00 (as I have suggested), do:

# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn

When you boot from this tape, the recovery will be interactive and you will have the ability to either abort the process or proceed with an unattended or advanced installation.

Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

Shalom,

Ignite is part of a toolset.

It can back up databases if they are down. Thats not what its designed to do.

Its very good at backing up a system boot volume, which can be done without shutting down any databases.

Other tools should be used to back up database data.

Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

Hi All,

Just needed one more info...

Can we take ignite backup of a production system and use that to replicate on a test server??

Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

Generally, yes. However, if the hardware is vastly different, it may not work. For example, trying to recover a rp7420 image onto an old D-class box is unlikely to succeed.

Re: Ignite Backup and recovery steps??

Manikandan,

Yes you can clone another server (e.g test server) using an Ignite backup of your production box. I would take the production ignite image of the O/S only, i.e vg00, and then restore all other filesystems using DataProtector or software of that ilk.
