Ignite Tape Recovery Problem - Boot Device Error...

Hi,

I'm having a problem with Ignite-UX C.6.1.44. I have made two recovery tapes on an L-Class server running HP-UX B.11.00 using the command: make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/0mn -x inc_entire=vg00

Both make_tape_recovery processes completed successfully according to the logs.

First I tried to recover a D320 test server using the tape but it bombed out with Bad LIF Magic errors. I guessed that maybe there was an incompatability issue between the two servers, so I tried again, this time on an A180. Recovery bombed out again, mentionig I/O errors and so forth.

I then managed to get hold of another L-Class that was not in use and tried to perform the recovery onto this server. However when trying to boot from the tape device from either tape the following happens:

ISL booting hpux (;0):INSTALL

Error returned from boot device driver.

STATUS returned from driver = -3

INFORMATION returned from driver:

Boot device error: reading utility file header.

Auto-execute file is inconsistent. Autoboot aborted.

And that's it. I'm stuck. Help?

Thanks - Lee

Re: Ignite Tape Recovery Problem - Boot Device Error...

Well, your L-class is a 64-bit machine. Depending on the firmware/PDC levels your D320 and A180 could be 32-bit only machines. If that is the case then your Ignite tape would not work.

Your best bet is recovering between the same, or at least very similar, machines. I think the D320 and the A180 are just too different for Ignite to work.

Re: Ignite Tape Recovery Problem - Boot Device Error...

I checked into this and it turns out that Patrick is right...both the D320 and A180 are 32 bit machines, so that explains that. However, the L-Class still failed to boot and gave the Boot Device Error.

The original L that the Ignite was made on is an L1000-36 running B.11.00. The one I tried to recover using the tape was an L2000-44.

I swapped the C1537A DDS3 DAT drive over with another that is known to work and tried again. This time however, i got errors reading IPL and Bad LIF Magic messages on both tapes.

So, I booted the server from disk to get into the OS. I am now running another make_tape_recovery on this server using the same Ignite-UX version (C.6.1.44) and once it's complete I'm going to attempt to boot from it and perform a recovery. I suppose if this works, it rules out the server and tape drive as having issues and leaves me with either...

The make_tape_recovery process is not working properly on the original server.

Both tapes are duff.

There is an incompatability between the L1000-36 and the L2000-44.

Will have to wait and see what happens.

Re: Ignite Tape Recovery Problem - Boot Device Error...

Lee,

You said that you made 2 tapes. Have you tried both tapes? Also, clean the drive.

If you are restoring to a spare L-class server, the incompatability problem should not arise. From the error message, it looks to me that it cannot read the tape properly, so is erroring.

When you tried to start the install, did you do a search for the tape drive and try to boot from it, did it find the tape and start trying to use it?

Regards,

Re: Ignite Tape Recovery Problem - Boot Device Error...

Normally STATUS returned from driver = -3
indicates there is some h/w issue .
As u said u tried restoring the backup thru both the tapes and got the same message so I'd request you to change the tape drive and try restoring the backup.
