Ignite and iniitab

Ignite and iniitab

Hello,

We create two types of image with Ignite C.6.0.109 on 11i system, one for C3750 wks models and one for C8000 models.

In the inittab file, we have the following entry on the two workstations:
xm:234:respawn:/usr/magellan/xdriver -inittab /dev/null 2>&1
(spaceball driver)

But when we re-install the images on the two wks, the inittab entry disappeared on C3750 model.
It seems that inittab file is not re-installed by ignite, just re-created from scratch...

Who has an idea?

Thx in advance.

Re: Ignite and iniitab

List the log file. (makerc log file??)
This has all the details about files/file systems ignited. Does inittab listed there??

Re: Ignite and iniitab

Hi Anil,

The /etc/initab file is in the .gz image image but without my last line "xm:234:respawn:/usr/magellan/xdriver -inittab /dev/null 2>&1". I'm sure that the driver startup is in /etc/inittab because I checked just before the make_sys_image command. Do I have to force the file to be in the backup file ?

Re: Ignite and iniitab

There are no known problems in our HP database about /etc/inittab not being backed up per se.

What version of ignite are using ?

What patches if any do you have for ignite ?

Re: Ignite and iniitab

The /etc/inittab is a special file in the ignite environment. This file is set to a default entry if you do a make_sys_image. There are other files which are also set back to default like /etc/nsswitch.conf.

The solution is to create a post installation script to your ignite installation.

A simple script like this.

echo "xm:234:respawn:/usr/magellan/xdriver -inittab /dev/null 2>&1" >>/etc/inittab

Place this script to /var/opt/ignite/scripts.

Then add this lines to your last config which is listed for that config in the /var/opt/ignite/INDEX file.

#
# Configuration scripts
#
init _hp_custom_scripts="Current Post Configuration Scripts"
_hp_custom_scripts visible_if FALSE
(_hp_custom_scripts=="Current Post Configuration Scripts") {
post_config_script+="/var/opt/ignite/scripts/"
} # end "Current Post Configuration Scripts"

for set the name of your script.

Add also this to your index file at the end.

scripts {
"/var/opt/ignite/scripts/"
}

That's it.

Re: Ignite and iniitab

Hello Roland,

This is the workaround we use now. Thx.

But if the inittab file is set to default when using make_sys_image, why is the line in the C8000 image ?

Re: Ignite and iniitab

I├В┬┤am not realy sure why it is in your image.

I think that will be done through the post_load
script from ignite. This script belongs to the core of the ignite image installation. But I recommend not to do any changes in this script. The better way is to create a script that will be done after all other ignite installation steps and the execute of your own scripts is the last step in the installation and you can be sure all will be done, what you configure there.
