Ignite backup

We have a c7000 blade enclosure having 6 bl860c blades and 2 bl460c blades,

bl860c are loaded with HPUX-FOE-11i.v2
and bl460c are loaded with windows 2003 enterprise edition

We need to take ignite backup of all 6 hpux blade server,
please let us know the possible ways of doing it.

If we buy one tape blade server we can take only the adjacent blade server ignite backup (as per HP site document).

So pls let us know the possibility of achieving this.

Re: Ignite backup

If you can't attach to the tape from every blade, you should be able to do network backupsm, make_net_recovery, to the blade that has the tape. And then stage that out to tape.

Re: Ignite backup

Hi Anthonys,

Make one server as a ignite backup server and other as a ignite client.Attched the tape library or tape to ignite server. Then by using make_net_recovery on client and make_tape_recovery on ignite server u can achive it.Check the man pages for make_net_recovery and make_tape_recovery.

Re: Ignite backup

Hi anthony,
from the man pages :-
make_tape_recovery creates a system recovery archive and stores archive on a local tape. make_tape_recovery is capable of creating
system recovery tapes for all DDS and DLT tape devices, with the ability to span multiple tapes.

So, it has nothing to do with your DB

use this command to take ignite backup

#ioscan -fnCtape
#make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -AIv -d -t "IGNITE_BACKUP_SERVER_NAME_24/12/08"

"and bl460c are loaded with windows 2003 enterprise edition"

I don't believe you *can* use Ignite for the bl460's, given they aren't running HPUX.

For those, you'll need something like Ghost or possible a Linux Live-CD and G4L. I could be wrong, but in this case I doubt it.

Out of 6 blade bl860c , make use of one and configure it as Ignite server and remaing as client. regarding Windows (bl460c are loaded with windows 2003 enterprise edition) I don't have much knowledge.

Re: Ignite backup

well...duh...I missed the fact that he mentioned only using Ignite for (6) servers. I mis-read, thought he had 4+2, not 6+2...

more coffee please!

Re: Ignite backup

In your scenario, its better you configure an Ignite Server-Client.

No need to tape-drive, no need of changing the tape.. :)

The only things which you require is space on the Ignite server.

Re: Ignite backup

In your case if you dont have seperate storage then ignite server-client setup and use of make_net_recovery is not advisable. Better use make_tape_recovery.
